Can't say I remember how long it took for the overpass/tunnel, 3 years or more? The Khorat to Khon Kaen dual tracking with dozens of the U-Turn bridges and underpasses took about 3 years. That included the elevated train stations at Ban Phai and KK. Given the lack of any hills or large rivers from Nong Khai to KK I would expect the flat land portions of the route won't take the full planned 3 years. Nong Khai to Udon shouldn't be a huge engineering feat. The elevated train station within Udon will iikely take the full 3 years..

Movement on the project. the Khon Kaen ato Nong Khai dual track project has its own FB page. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61574104897708

If you notice land clearing, filling or prep work for the project please post an update to this string.

Posted on the 21st they confirm the elevated rail through Udon from the north side (Rte 2 overpass) then elevated over the Ring Road north side, to Udon Train Station and then to just south of the east Ring Road. 15 kilometers.

saw two large construction camps, with barracks, workshops, storage and maintenance facilities erected 2.5km south of the East Ring Road adjacent to the current track. Just south of the Kham Kling train stop. This area is where the elevated dual track viaduct is planned to return to ground level.. located both sides of the track, here:

Re: SRT double tracking Nam Pong to Non Sa-at

this fellow is doing a video of the Khon Kaen to Nong Khai Route. this is 2/5 of his current series. I didn't post 1/5 because zero to be seen of any construction. This 2/5 shows right of way clearance along the tracks just south of Nam Pong to perhaps 15-20 kilometers north of Nam Pong station. This episode ends at Non Sa-at station. You'll observe that most stations have multiple (3-5) lay-bys. That's where a lot of freight trains sit awaiting higher speed passenger trains to go by. Once the dual track is fully completed it should definitely increase freight traffic getting to the south much faster. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cekWkqPLEWg

I've seen some folks thinking this won't get done for many years. I just look at the Ban Phai to Nakhon Phanom link being constructed right now. You can look on Googe Street maps which show mid 2024 photos where there is no clearing no construction of the new track route. Then I watch videos of the current progress and see dual tracks laid and welded along with numerous steel girder pre-fab rail bridges completed. In MahaSarakham the elevated rail bridge that goes through the south side of the city is coming along fairly quickly.. In another year it won't be completed to its final destination but I aniticpate rail traffic from at least Ban Phai south of Khon Kaen through to Roiet.

another episode on the route from KK to NK. Today it is Non Sa-at to Nong Takai near Non Soong.. Early right of way clearing south of Khumpawapi (about 6km) and you can see a mob of engineers and workers in hard hats and orange vest walking along the railway just north of Khumpawapi. Just south of Nong Takai there is right of way clearing going on now.

Re: SRT double tracking episode 4/5 Nong Takai to Na Phu

it shows the contruction camp on the east side of the tracks by Kham Kling. The larger and complete camp is on the west side. From Udon Railway Station to near Nong Sim there is right of way clearing on the east side of the tracks.

Just north of Nong Takai the new tracks on the east side of the rail line go into the Udon Thani Industrial Estate where there will be a Customs free zone for cargo.

Dual track progress Nong Khai to Udon Station

Post by FrazeeDK »

this guy is doing these updates every 4-6 weeks or so. In this one he rides the 3rd class from Nong Khai to Udon. Lots of clearing with some foundation put down for the 2nd track. What I don't see though is pilings being built for overpasses for all the grade crossings that exist. I'll wing it and figure those are a separate contract for bridge building.. Also, From Rte 2 on the north side through Udon is supposed to be elevated so we should see digging and pile driving for the pillars to be built.. They just started construction back around Sept/Oct so progress seems on track so to speak..

I noticed graders and backhoes working on what appears to be a widening of the rail bed on the south side of the Wearsai x-crossing (between Nong Sim and the Global/Sam Phrao lights)..

Maybe linked to dual tracking the existing tracks or maybe the preparation for pile driving for the elevated?

High speed rail construction bridging crane. collapsed and hit a train going to Ubon. Last noted, 3 killed and dozens injured with emergency services having to extract victims from the damaged train cars. The HSR construction has only had one other reported accident, a tunnel collapse during contruction of the Lamtakong HSR tunnel. Three Chinese engineers were killed in that one. This will get a lot of attention since the HSR construction has many of these bridging cranes lifting bridge segements in many places that adjoin the SRT tracks. This one was a cross-over section moving the HSR overhead viaduct from one side of the SRT tracks to the other. I'd expect a complete halt to HSR construction until the causes of the bridging crane collapse are identified and remedied.

Latest death toll is 32.

Channel 3 morning news running an intensive discussion under the banner "Safety Last" and highlights that the contract was awarded by SRT to a joint venture between Italian-Thai Development PLC and China Rail Company #10 Engineering Company. Foreign media describes the HSR as sponsored by China but funded by Thailand.

I'm assuming this accident happened on the Korat-Nong Khai section that was approved last February.

I thought that had been completed, but obviously not. Imagery of accident site from April 2025. These trestle type of pillars are only where the HSR crosses from one side of the existing railway track to the other.

Looks like one of these collapsed. Seen here working on the single pillars. From one of @FrazeeDK's other thread on the HSR.
