MasterCard Debit For Direct Deposit of US SS

Post by LoneTraveler »

Hello! Since the occurrences with bank accounts being frozen, I am looking into having my monthly US Social Security being directly deposited onto the MasterCard debit used by the department of treasury and then I can deposit/and or withdraw using a ATM in Thailand. This should lesson to some degree, the concern over a frozen and/or money being stolen from my account.
Any thought on this matter? I would love to hear from those whom may have taken this action or are giving it consideration.

Thank You in Advance

Guess it would depend on the ATM fees associated with your debit card.

IMO, if you've already checked with the bank and your account is in order (for now) I wouldn't sweat .... it to much.

ATM fees are expensive. Find a Thai bank that allows free counter withdrawals using g your card. I get my money once or twice a month that way, no fees other than Mastercard currency conversion rate.

My experience on this .. similar tale
Got the same message from K bank over a month ago , when into the branch near old immo office and was informed my withdrawal limit was reduced from 50k to 20k per day also limit on debit card use in tandem.
Was advised to call the Kbank helpline to increase limits ...this turned out to be a total waste of time so went into Kbank in Central filled out numerous forms and was told it would be changed within 30 days as its a temporary issue .. 6 weeks now n still on the lower limits so i withdrew all but 500 bt and put it in my KRUNGSRI bank who seem far more customer friendly with 100k daily limit on cash withdrawals and 200k on D Visa purchases ,.. also regardless of BKK Bank getting very bad press recently i found Bangkok bank in Boontavorn to offer excellent service across the board.

Good info DM, thanks. There's little doubt that the account locking nonsense that BBL initiated has seen a surge of new account opening at Kasikorn by foreigners. Probably the same BoT rules that buggered up BBL are being applied at Kasikorn in a different way, and they are rolling out checks on all foreigner's accounts and lowering thresholds until these checks are completed?

Same here but without the SMS. Bloody annoying when you've been with a Bank for years and there is no evidence of any naughtiness with deposits or transactions. Your account is being buggered about because of Xi's mafia and their Thai allies messing about with money laundering and other nefarious activities.

Which is why I only use my Thai bank account ( Krungsri ) for immigration renewal, no need for dodgy Thai internet and App banking, just a book. All withdrawals direct from UK credit card at the Thai bank counter. Never a problem (yet).

rick wrote: October 23, 2025, 2:48 pm My banking is similar, I only use account for immigration, no app or sms or inquiries. The 4 month rule surprised me however, I was told by immigration a few years back to make sure a deposit is made each month of the year or have total amount available 3 months before renewal. I recently renewed my visa extension and they closely scrutinized my bank statement and bank book (more so than in years past) and I have been doing this for 20 years.

My worry concerning bank account, is thief which will more than likely, have little to no recourse to prove. Therefore, I will try using a direct deposit account for Immigration, not fool proof, but I think harder to commit fraud because no electronic devices associated with account (thoughts).
