I am all for the UN recognizing a legitimate Palestinian state. Neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority can claim to be legitimate. Granting them such status now is a win for Teheran, not for Palestine.

Blinken has warned Israel about embarking on a long road of Iranian-led counter-insurgency if Netanyahu pursues the current military 'strategy'.

And what will that do to stop Hamas and end their declared policy of from the river to the sea?
Isn't that what the IDF has been trying to do for the last 8 months - while inflicting (what I suspect is deliberate) huge human and infrastructure collateral damage at the same time?

Yes, they have in retaliation for the Hamas attack on Israel. Perhaps if the leaders of Hamas order their soldiers to lay down their arms, and said leaders go into exile, and discard their policy of seeking to eliminate Israel. we might get somewhere towards a sustainable peace.

Well done by Australia in joining with other democratic countries such as;

- Belgium
- Brazil
- Denmark
- France
- Greece
- India
- Indonesia
- Ireland
- Japan
- New Zealand
- Norway
- Poland
- Portugal
- South Korea
- Singapore
- Spain

in voting to pass a resolution to provide new "rights and privileges" to a Palestinian state and push the Security Council to reconsider their admission as the 194th member of the U.N. =D>

Without such pressure on the recalcitrant Israel, the slaughter in Gaza, and the oppression in the West Bank, will continue for as long a people like Netanyahu and his convicted terrorist supporters on the far right of Israeli politics continue in power.
Only the one Muslim nation voting for 'democracy' but not a single middle eastern one and notably no erstwhile neighbors of this so-called "Palestine".

Why do you think that is?

Sorry doll, just responding to your earlier rather incomplete cut-and-paste job.

Dont really care if there was 140 countries that voted yes. These are the ones that count

The United Nations Security Council veto power is the power of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) to veto any "substantive" resolution.

So are you against the UN per se, or just the 5 country veto system in the Security Council?

Yes it was because you wanted to pollute this thread with feral Aussie politics (and have a pop at Sport).

I thought you were more focussed than that.

It was Sport's post that was incomplete - suggesting as it did that it was only Muslim countries and Australia that voted for the resolution. I was highlighting the many other democratic countries which also voted for this positive change.

That was quite focussed. As was your trite pop at me.

30 all ...

Back to the crux of the matter, how do you see this "positive change" manifesting itself when one of the two primary belligerents is operating via violent, extremist proxies?

Let us be honest about this situation, despite many on here touting an answer of sorts, as one side has
rejected FOUR previous attempts to promote any sort of answer and the other comp0oletely removed its presence form land, then it would take and act of God or Allah to determine and decide the outcome. Truthfully I doubt if either one would poke their noses into the scenario, so it is left to Man/Woman to determine the outcome and both sides are polarised that peace may never happen .

And the international pressure (rightly) builds.
Australia joins 12 other democracies urging Israel to comply with humanitarian law in Gaza

Israel must comply with international law in Gaza and address the devastating humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave, a group of Western nations including Australia have written in a letter to the Israeli government seen by the Reuters news agency on Friday.

All countries belonging to the Group of Seven (G7) major democracies, apart from the United States, have signed the letter, Reuters reports, along with Australia, South Korea, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Finland.
