Foodpanda or Grab for food delivery?

Post by tamada » November 17, 2023, 8:11 pm

What's the membership's opinions on the two food delivery platforms. Which do you prefer and why?

I was a Grab acolyte as the same app handily serves markets in other regional countries with minimal fuss, ie. Your billing method is shared and you only need to chose what you want to eat.

More recently, I have been using Foodpanda here after I was told their language interface/translations of menus are better. It does seem to simplify the selection and ordering procedures.

Delivery efficiency hasn't been an issue with either (except one time Mrs tam ordered pizza on the drive back from a school run. The Grab guy had issues "finding" us on the Mitrapharp, about a mile north of Udon!).

Another question: how much do you tip your rider? I usually drop 50 baht as our orders tend to be for family dining and upwards of 500 baht a pop. Mrs tam gave the pizza delivery guy 100 baht for his perseverance as she was oblivious to how the GPS-based system works.

I use Grab for ride hailing overseas but for this thread, I'm only interested in opinions on their local food delivery service.

My wife uses the 7/11 service once in awhile. She doesn't tip as far as I know. We've never tried the ones you mention.

I use both Grab and Food Panda. Both work fine for me and sometime the overlapping restaurants show closed on one or the other so I often switch up a bit. My orders are generally just for me so my tips are generally in the 20-30 range. More if I order big. If the driver cannot find me even with the address in Thai and EN, directions complete with landmarks and precise details in Thai and GPS coordinates in the remarks then I tend not to tip. I don't want to incentivize poor service or lazy riders. Ontime or even late but no fault of the rider and riders that take the order then need to wait at the restaurant for long periods tend to get a little higher tip.

I think one of them (Panda, I think) allows for a tip to be set as default it that is a preference you might have.

Mrs tam's niece sometimes uses the 7 service. No personal experience though.

I’ve used Grab since Covid days and find the service outstanding. I order food just for me 3 or 4 times a week and give the delivery guy/girl a 20฿ tip. They always seem pleased and grateful.

Not used FoodPanda so can’t offer an opinion.

I tend to switch up depending on the delivery fee for that trip from each vendor. This morning, GRAB charged a 29 Baht delivery fee to come from downtown to my home near BIG C at the flyover. These delivery fees have steadily increased over the past few years. During Covid when they first began, the fees ranged less than 10 Baht. I used to tip handsomely until I discovered that a delivery guy is paid a flat 60 Baht per delivery regardless of the monetary value of the order. In my mind that's plenty, so my tips generally range from 10 to 20 Baht.

It seems that Grab, Panda and Lineman in Khon Kaen all give their delivery people 40 baht for a 7 km. trip.

I was looking for Urban Pizza last Sunday and Foodpanda said they were closed whereas Grab (my usual delivery from UP) had them trading. Fast delivery from their kitchen in the PTT out the Nongkhai road a bit.

BTW, UP's Red Devil pizza is delicious spicy.
