Jane Birkin
Re: Jane Birkin
One thing that is hard for me to understand is the respect that Thai people have for wealthy people; This is regardless of how they became wealthy. An example is police road stops. Fancy imported cars are waved through with a salute while all others are waiting in a line. People spend millions of baht for these vehicles. My old Isuzu pickup will likely still be running when those super expensive vehicles are no longer serviceable. TIT!
Re: Jane Birkin
the culture of "big face" permeates Thai society in many areas. My wife gets asked by acquaintances and friends as to why we don't buy a BMW or a Benz or even a Fortuna SUV as opposed to a nice Toyota Yaris. She knows a number of retired teachers who bought 1.2-.1.5 million SUV's just prior to retiring. In some cases those cars are probably worth more than their house... Its not just the acquistion of stuff culture, its also the knuckling of brows to perceived authority figures.. I never liked watching my Thai relatives bow and scrape to middle rank bureaucrats when going to the Tessaban or downtown for some type of service.. Being polite and respectful is one thing.. Being obsequious almost to the point of prostrating oneself is ridiculous.. Seems like the younger Thais are now developing a more equal way of dealing of authority and that's a good thing..

Re: Jane Birkin
A Chinese author wrote about this in his four books. The first one was 'Crazy Rich Asians'. It was also made into a movie. One of the themes in his books is how the Hong Kong and Chinese rich looked down on the wealthy mainland Chinese because they were buying the wrong status symbols, and thus had to be inferior. That view has recently changed.Udon Map wrote: ↑September 12, 2023, 5:45 pmHaving money and having class are two very different things. However, those in the know...the high-so society crowd, realise what it means, and could identify the bag and the person carrying it was a person of class and status. I prefer my back pack.

Probably genuine dogs too and not this latter-day affectation of some travelers being inseparable from their "emotional support [insert animal here]"Laan Yaa Mo wrote: ↑September 13, 2023, 9:05 amI remember flying Finnair from Bangkok to Toronto. They permitted passengers to bring their dogs on board. That's class.

Dead, who's dead?
Anyway back off-topic lots of these luxury items including bags and watches are now considered investment items. Try and go into Hermes and buy a Birkin bag (or Rolex to buy a watch) and you have next to no chance of getting one. People waiting 7 years on a waiting list for some models of Patek Phillipe!

Lots of baseball bats are sold at Central in Khon Kaen. I can't imagine what a baseball bat would be used for if not to hit a baseball a country mile. Oh, right, to club someone over the head.

And there was DM sayin' that the map was boring and parochial.

Re: Jane Birkin
Aluminum bats aren't real baseball bats. They have to be made out of wood to count. Check the major leagues, and see how many players use aluminum.
- wikiDoes the MLB use wood or aluminum bats?
The reason MLB players are required to use wood bats is because they are required to. And they're mandated to because of tradition and that the length of the sweet spot and manipulation of swing weight in nonwood bats would fundamentally change the game. In other words, we don't see it happening. Ever.May 2, 2566 BE

Re: Jane Birkin
Another thing that makes me cringe is the children of prominent wealthy Thais.Their perceived superior attitudes and their reckless driving of Ferrari's. and other super expensive sports cars. These children are totally spoiled by their parents. They will inherit vast fortunes and continue their untouchable life styles.
Maybe I'm just jealous. I inherited nothing and had to work hard for what little I have. Even at that, I am far luckier than most because I am comfortably retired here in Thailand and don't have to live on a tight budget. I carefully planned my retirement.
