Food Forum

Post by Whistler » November 25, 2020, 4:22 pm

It will be interesting to see how many want to share this topic. Mods, maybe a new major subject?

Like many farangs, I have a wide range of food I eat. However, some ingredients are either hard to find or expensive. Could we have a forum on this? Post recipies, point out where we can find ingredients, spices, etc.

Sub topics

- Where to buy
- British
- American
- European
- Mexican/Spanish
- Italian

etc

As long as Watties spaghettit is not a sub topic, what do others think?

Those who have a culinary bent, a very useful topic. Including ways to cook certain foodstuffs, as although most can read recipes, advice is always useful especially from those here, using local cooking customs and utensils etc.

i have already tried with the baking topic ,no response there , maybe most members here have only skills to open cans en nuke everything (microwave) as they are into cooking them self ? or are going out to eat or take away ?,or simply do not want to post about their culinary skills ?....
however a topic like fe the bickering corner , or kinder garden space would thrive very well i think ,a place to vent all their anger towards each other , and indeed a way of not polluting other topic with their quarrels?... :(

I follow your baking ,but I suppose I'm interested cooking. One thing is I know quite a few people that don't even own a microwave. As for eating out there are plenty of places that now have specials on so plenty of cheap meals out to be had.
I guess its not like the old days, so much more available now

Thanks for polluting this one already. Good stuff.

WRT you're perceived failure at garnering comment on the baking thread, maybe there's nothing much to say when it's mostly pictures of what you've baked.

Maybe it's your condescending style of posting with childish comments about can openers and microwave ovens?

Maybe nobody gives a toss.

I just watched a fella make me a 2 egg omelette with red & green capsicum, red onion, ham & cheese. Does that count as cooking? I was at least arms length away from the hot plate

I’m now eating my way through the fresh, warm Danish pastry offerings with fresh brew coffee.
I’m sure they’ve been made this morning

I've just finished my bowl of porridge oats made from scratch, not your packet "instant" variety either. Note that no microwave oven was involved in this excitingly creative Scottish masterpiece (aren't they all?).

Took me about 6 months from planting the oats to harvesting them. I had to modify a neighbor's spare rice thresher since groats are different from rice. For freshness, only roll the amount that's immediately needed. I soak them for a day before using a regular rolling pin.

One cup of oats to one and half cups of water. Bring to the boil in a small saucepan then immediately reduce to a simmer but keep stirring. Salt to taste (or sugar if you're a Sassenach). Serve piping hot in a bowl with a splash of Magnolia Half Cream or Meiji half and half.

Sometimes I stir a handful of raisins about 5 minutes before serving up, sometimes I don't.

Cheese sauce for all, enchildas, tacos etc

For the serious cook using a microwave for glug free cheese sauce.

1 Tablespoon butter, or quality olive oil
1 1/2 Tablespoons of plain flour
2 cups of milk
Grated cheese to taste (let every nation grate again)
dash of nutmeg optional

1. In a pyrex jug, heat the butter oild until it starts to bubble

2. stir in the flour until mixture is smooth

3. Microwave again until mixture is dry and forming bubbles

4. In 3 or 4 steps, add milk, stir well and microwave until mixture bubbles

5. When all of the milk is used, add grated cheese, stir well, zap again and you have a great roux based cheese sauce.

For the dead lazy

1 can of Prego cheese and herb sauce (Tesco, Makro etc)
1/2 cup milk
Cheese to taste

mix all three together heat and serve.
