The death rate is expected to rise:
An autumn surge in covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, would not be an October surprise: It has been hypothesized since early in the pandemic because of the patterns of other respiratory viruses.

“My feeling is that there is a wave coming, and it’s not so much whether it’s coming but how big is it going to be,” said Eili Klein, an epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine ...

A model produced by the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation and published Friday forecasts a “most likely” daily death toll of 1,907 on Election Day, roughly double the current toll. Under the IHME forecast, the numbers would continue to rise until early December, peaking at more than 2,800 deaths daily.

By year’s end, 410,000 people in the United States will have died under the model’s most-likely scenario. That’s more than double current fatalities. The model also produced best-case and worst-case scenarios — ranging from 288,000 to 620,000 deaths by Jan. 1 — depending on the degree to which people wear masks, adhere to social distancing and take other precautions.

Here's a bit of speculation about what might have happened in the US if the US had a competent rather than a nutbar president:
What would America be like today if President Trump had acted decisively in January to tackle the coronavirus, as soon as he was briefed on the danger?

One opportunity for decisive action came Jan. 28, when his national security adviser, Robert C. O’Brien, told Trump that the coronavirus “will be the biggest national security threat you face in your presidency.” ...

Linsey Marr, an expert on disease transmission at Virginia Tech, isn’t sure that we could have achieved South Korean or (somewhat higher) Japanese levels of mortality, because both of those countries have more of a tradition of mask-wearing. But she does believe that we could have perhaps achieved German levels (meaning an 80 percent reduction in deaths).

On this subject every country (with a population of over a million) outranks the USA the only contenders for bottom place are Brazil & India and they have a long way to go to get the bottom.

India I can understand , with such a huge population and some extreme poverty it was always going to be rough on them . if they lock down they starve. The affluent west has no excuse ,no one will go hungry

I feel sorry for Americans too. If China can get rid of the virus, the Americans shouldn't be enduring the Trump pandemic. The US should have been able to squash it. The US had been rated the best prepared nation for a pandemic.

NZ's national pandemic plan was useless so we turned to the WHO and formulated plans based around WHO advice. Thank you to the WHO and thank you to Johnson and the UK government for recently generously increasing the UK funding to the WHO.

The hammer is coming down in the UK with fines of up to £10,000 for those caught violating the latest regulations. The starter fine is £1000 which I assume is for individuals being muppets like making a twunt of themselves without a mask in Aldi's whereas the big fines would maybe be for munters organizing parties, raves and secret wedding pissups.

Much righteous indignation about the government appearing to encourage people to 'grass' on their neighbors. If they really want to get a grip on the minority that think for whatever reason that the rules don't apply to them, I recommend they start rewarding the grasses. A thousand quid for busting the ***** next door that regularly has his mates around to the backyard barbie and watch footie. Ten thousand if he supports LFC. That'll shut the moral hand-wringers right up I reckon (and give them a nice, secret wee earner).

Someone who doesn’t like the situation today

Yes the U.K. is having a very large jump in cases, but, thankfully, the death rate hasn’t jumped by a similar amount yet

He dose not point out that many other countries have similar increases

But most countries controlled the spread and had huge decreases in numbers.

There is at least one exception to that, the totally messed up USA that isn’t really a genuine country as it has no effective leadership. The only leader it had absolutely disclaimed any leadership role and pushed it down to the 50 states.

There are a few countries that also did not control the numbers, like Brazil whose president is almost as crazy as the Rump, but even there the progression in South America is remarkably different from most northern hemisphere countries

Heard a very good and positive comment today.

“It’s the first time in UK history that no one has died of old age”

Must be attributing the deaths to other problems.
Maybe be they have changed their diet like many on UM. Good work to Britain.

Ashamed to be English since 23rd June 2016 when England voted for racism & economic suicide.

Disgusted that the UK is “governed” by a squalid bunch of economically illiterate, self-serving, sleazy and corrupt neo-fascists.
