Woody,

I have based this on total infections and deaths. The rate of decline is not outstanding, still very large numbers of infections and deaths, it would have to drop by a very large extent to be considered a success.

I agree with many posters that the economic costs for lockdowns is huge, the tough question is what is the trade off? Human life or economic disruption?

Frankly, I don't know, if I err on any side it is lives for sure, I think we can ramp up after the pandemic peak and maybe get on track by later in 2020. I hope so.

I understand that many epidemiological experts think that if lock downs are lifted too early the virus will sweep back through regions not practicing social distancing sufficiently well and start to kill so many people that lock downs will need to be reimposed. Perhaps many states in the US that are easing up now will be forced to lock down in June and July. That might happen to Blighty too although I'd expect the British to observe social distancing rules better than Americans.

Since a certain degree of social distancing is the normal British attitude, apart from in the pubs and wine bars, increasing it by a metre will be no problem

Sweden 8/5/20 705 new infections, 99 deaths.

Thailand 3000 infections and 55 deaths for the whole period of the pandemic with a population 7 times greater than Sweden.

The curve has flattened in Sweden, but flattened at a very high rate.

Hold on a second.
Comparing Sweden with Thailand is like comparing Oranges and potatoes.
Sweden is an open society and their numbers are most likely more dependable.
Thailand has started on April 26 to go and look for infected people i.e. active testing , compared to passive testing, waiting for the sick to show up as it has been done since the beginning.
Howe many tests done in each country ?
Thailand has 3-4 million legal and illegal foreign workers, how many have been tested ? Zero.
Thailand has 300 000 men and women in the armed forces, how many have been tested ? How many Covid cases found ?
Again Zero.
Thailand is in a race to become a COVID-Free country asap to attract Asian tourists, which is a very strong incentive to fudge the numbers.
I personally take Thai Covid figures with a grain of salt i wish they would be more straight forward about the situation,
but TIT.
Have a nice safe Covid-free day.

Celebrities including Ant and Dec and Rod Stewart took part, donating personal items for fans to bid on. The auction, run by BIN-IN Auctions, which is helping charities with fundraising during Covid-19, raised almost £600,000 for the cause.

And Mr Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, decided to join in, offering up his own much-loved piece of Newcastle United memorabilia.

Due to political pressure on the CDC to exclude COVID deaths the USA numbers that were already known to be too low by somewhere between 10% and 50% will now be both unreliable and under reported by some unknown amount

Trump's self appraisal from the weekend - no doubt he gives himself 10/10, despite the 90,000 deaths.
“So I think we had a great weekend. We did a lot of terrific meetings. Tremendous progress is being made on many fronts, including coming up with a cure for this horrible plague that has beset our country,” said Trump on Sunday. “It was a working weekend, it was a good weekend. A lot of very good things have happened.”

I think the English translation would be "42 carat plonker"

however i'd also point out, that is highly discriminatory to plonkers (and fuuckwits)

Just sitting with a vodka and lime well chilled , then quite a horrific thought came to mind. If the open the borders and let international flights resume , then they allow bars to open .any ladies working in the bars will within a couple of weeks meet and chat with quite a few guys . Now even if there is no very close contact...you know what I mean by that. Well they will have contact with lots of customers . So you meet a pretty lady, she's been back at work for 10days , in that time she has sat and had a drink with say 50 guys. She also hangs out with a few other ladies who have met 50 guys. So follow my lead ,...when they lift restrictions the guys will be from
China
India
Pakistan
So not that I'm seen as racist let's put everyone on the list
UK
America
Oh bugger from everywhere
Ok they now allow massages but that's not bad when your in a country clear of it ,but as soon as he border opens all bets are off.drinking in a bar not a good idea, having rub not a good idea , being anywhere near an entertainment area not a good idea. We just spent nearly 2 months hiding , my wife's parent's are in their 80s so we have had to let them look after themselves . Simply put this crap has not gone away , I won't risk other people's lives for a few sheckles. Quite depressing really ,and I understand why this country has isolated itself . Just sayin, my 2 cents worth . Fug the vaccine they need better therapies to stop people dying , over and out..I think it's time for another afternoon tipple .

Hi Papa,
You're not gunna like what I'm gunna say, but,
if you're scared of Corona virus, you need to isolate forever.
Many experts saying that there will be no vaccine,
even if there is one, it will be like the flu vaccine and only protect against one strain at a time, even when there is more than one strain circling the earth at any one time.

That's the new reality, unfortunately.
It's not going away.

We are all gunna get it at some stage.
Such is life.

Sorry for the bad news.
Grab a few more Vodka's, I reckon, and enjoy every yourself.

It's not me I'm worried about ,it's other people. I've been here for so long now ,buried so many good friends . Most of maybe 80% of the people I know are in the high risk groups . I don't want to sit and talk to my friends about the people we miss . Sorry I'm a soppy socialist bastard worrying for everyone else . ..sod the vodka , give me a leo . Our song at my place is....,..always look on the bright side of life. Chin up as us Brits say...it's worse at sea ya know

Here are the latest numbers.

The USA numbers are now certainly under reporting due to political pressure and people being fired from their jobs because they will not fudge the reporting. So no real conclusions can be drawn from them, But as they are in the spreadsheet already I will continue to update it.
