Gas changeover valve
Gas changeover valve
I am installing a 'Western' kitchen' in our village house. As part of this the unsightly gas bottle is going outside with the pipe coming through the exterior wall. I want to fix the problem of running out of gas every now and then, of course it always happens when cooking dinner. Want an extra bottle, but a simple changeover tap, like a 'T' piece, I had one of these in Brisbane years ago.
Can anybody help me to find such a beast in Udon?

Re: Gas changeover valve
Can you show an example of the one you had in Brisbane.
I really can not imagine why you would want such a thing.
EG
If your bottle was empty which you were using you would have to go outside to operate the changeover switch.
You would then have to disconnect that bottle to get it refilled.
Why not just connect the empty gas bottle to the spare full one.
This would take no more than 2 minutes.
For such a set up you want I would think you need Non Return Valves on each bottle to stop the full one putting gas into the empty one.
If not you would end up with 2 half full bottles.

when tap is up, both bottles isolated, left it draws from left bottle, right ditto.
Can be mounted inside house easily

Try Lazada
Personally I would not want one of them inside my house.
There are lots for sale in Hardware stores BUT for water.
It looks cheap and with a plastic handle has 4 points of leaks.
That is if you could find a fitting for the inlet.
The other fittings would be Jubilee clips.
Easier to walk outside & change the gas bottles over takes 2 minutes.
And a lot safer.
Every time I change my gas bottle I check it for leaks with soapy water.
Even though the gas bottles are outside.

Re: Gas changeover valve
Get one from Australia Via Amazon or whatever,
I certainly would not trust one bought in Thailand Via China whatever.
There again the one from Aussie would probably be made in China

Re: Gas changeover valve
You will find the T fitting and inline gas taps in the catering suppliers on Posri Road on the corner opposite the tung si meang showground. Most decent regulators are fitted with non return valves but I prefer in line taps to make sure. I have seen auto changeover systems like we used on our catering trailers in the UK but they are ludicrously expensive.
The forest was shrinking daily but the trees kept voting for the axe as its handle was made of wood and they thought it was one of them.
Re: Gas changeover valve
We actually keep two spare bottles. It takes less than five minutes to change the regulator from the empty bottle to a full one.pal52 wrote: ↑March 23, 2020, 6:20 pmCan you show an example of the one you had in Brisbane.

Changing over bottles is easy, but....
If i a am out or on my frequent business trips (now suspended) my wife or daughter cannot manage this, they can arrange a changeover tap really easily. It also serves as a shout off valve.
A more elegant and easier system IMHO

Re: Gas changeover valve
I think you are going underestimating your family. I actually thought it was 2nd nature for Thais to change bottles over.
But my advice is do not put the valve inside the house. Put it outside for safety and accessible to all outside.
Would be best for obvious reasons to have a very minimum of pipe connections inside.
When I built I ran a continuous copper line from outside from the bottles to the gas burner unit.
I did consider the valve here in Thailand as I had one on my house in Australia for the 2 x 90kg propane bottles used for heating, but my girl here said she loves to change bottles.

Whistler, the link above is for the fairly standard type of Gas Regulator used in most domestic premises. I do not believe they are fitted with non return valves (why would they need to be for normal single gas bottle applications) You need to check with the manufacturers if these are suitable for working backwards so to speak and that pressurizing from the outlet side (working in reverse) will not damage the valve and become dangerous if/when required to work correct way round. If you already have a specialised valve in mind I apologise in advance.

Re: Gas changeover valve
To make sure install an inline non return valve, they cost about 100 baht but Alex is right it would seem that not all regulators are made equally, mine don't flow gas unless you push a button but many aren't like that.

Re: Gas changeover valve
This being Thailand, a country where, as pointed out earlier, most of the locals can change a gas bottle in their sleep, I see an inevitable scenario where the immense practicality, safety and convenience of swapping gas bottles, especially on-the-fly, is defeated by the inevitability of encountering the two empty gas bottles scenario.
