An impossible question to answer. Everytime a government officer makes a statement about the economy we know that she or he is lying and manipulating the figures.
Less than 2 weeks ago a government minister announced that the tourist trade was blooming. That's why the hotels were only half fall. :^o
One thing I have noticed since living here is most Thais will never admit there is a problem. It's part of their culture of saving face.
I think you would get a more accurate answer by looking in a crystal ball.
As there has been very few reponses to your question is, the answer is we just don't know? :?

May as well resurrect an ancient thread. The chart shows per capita growth for the past 22 years (2538-2560). Northeast corridor in red, Udon in ?green?. Korat in pink and Khonkaen in yellow.

In all the years I have lived in the boonies of Loei province, NEVER have I seen this amount of new construction, not to mention road improvements. I often wonder where all the money is coming from.

I read in the financial press in the UK that the Thai balance of payments is strong, i.e. exports substantially exceed imports, which is why the baht remains strong.

What World Financial Crisis are you referring too. The last one where we had to bail out the banks or the next one. Please clarify what you mean by "recent political problems in Thailand" Just now, 5+ years after having a military coup, Thailand have a fully democratic, honest Government who only tell the people that everything is rosy and don't worry about lack of water, jobs, money etc and the increase in Indian Tourists will bring back the good old days of milk and honey.

Would not have anything to do with the present rulers trying to get the local traditionally Red Shirt, Taskin supporters on board would it??

Even The Airlines are complaining about the STRENGTH of The Baht !!...........Meanwhile, airlines operating in Thailand say they are being battered by a weak economy and the baht’s strength, which is reducing international tourist arrivals...........So At Least Some are telling it is how it is !!!!

Maybe the roads but the new construction, businesses and homes, is private money so likely nothing to do with red shirt politics.

If you've done any traveling around various provinces, not just Isaan, you'll see boatloads of new roads, highways, and new buildings everywhere. When we first moved to Thailand, I hesitated to say there was much of a middle class. Today, there's definitely a middle class.......sure there are plenty of poor people, but if you want to work, you can....in country or out of country. Eventually, as happens everywhere, there will be a slow down. But for the time being, I don't see it in Udon.
Vans and Sketchers coming to Central.
