Train Update

Post by parrot » September 13, 2018, 6:24 pm

I haven't taken the train to Bangkok in fifteenish years, but need to be in place in the middle of Bangkok at 9AM.....and not keen on spending a night if I don't need to.
I've heard the train service has been upgraded from dinosaur days. Does anyone have updated info on the services provided?

the BKK Post highlighted that a complete new sleeper train set was bought for the Northeastern run over a year ago. Here's the "Express" schedule for the night run to BKK http://www.railway.co.th/Ticket/list_st ... =26&Leg=en here's the fares for the sleeper http://www.railway.co.th/Ticket/CheckPr ... nguage=eng

Now the question is, with new cars, new engine, etc. will the service match the higher prices?? The schedule says 6AM arrival in BKK but that is barring any issues enroute.

My wife ,daughter inlaw and babies used the over night sleeper everytime they went down to BKK, but due to the cost now being almost double that of the VIP coaches and taking 2-3 hours longer ,they now opt for the GOLD seal coaches (not 100% sure if i got the name right) they get there 6-61/2 hours ,

It has every time I've or SWMBO has used it both on to and from Bangkok exactly on time at every station, sometimes a little early into Bangkok. We have used it about 6 times so far and it's more convenient if you are carrying a lot of baggage, though the day time bus may be better with not much.

It's comfortable, with good AC, power at every bed, on time and about an hour faster than the old one. No alcohol is available or permitted (they say) though if discrete no problem.

We ended up taking the 7:35 Nok Air flight, a 43min taxi to the vicinity of Lumpini Park/Satorn Road, finished our business in less than an hour, a taxi back to Don Muang and caught the 12:35 Nok Air back to Udon. Parked in the covered/pay airport parking in Udon.......just under 8 hours for less than 200 Baht.
We could have easily caught an earlier Air Asia flight for our return to Udon, but when making online reservations, I didn't want to chance traffic/weather/whatever.
All in all, an easy trip to Bangkok. I joked with my wife on the way home.....if you want to pop up to Bangkok to get a bite to eat sometime, we can do it easily!
A few notes: Air Asia/Nok Air flights cost pretty much the same thing+- a hundred or so. But Thai Smile......hahaha. We'll use Thai Smile (if they last) if we need to fly into/out of Suvarnaphumi.

Don Muang is a welcome change from the crowds at Suvarnaphumi. Wide open concourses......plentiful places to eat for reasonable prices....a 7-11 in the departure lounge with 7-11 prices.
Bangkok taxis have to be the best taxi deal in the world. Still start out at 35 baht.....after all these years!
