I know this sound stupid but have you checked to see if the tank is full , just a thought ,when my pipes sometimes block up ,usually due to the glutenous rice bunged down the sink , i boil several big pots of water ( the hot water breaks down the glutenous rice) after a while it clears ,

A friend was disposing of many tools and I grabbed something like above from him. Mine several metres long, thinner and really all wire coil. But on several occasions, it's done the job in the kitchen and shower drains (the ladies' long hair!)

At the risk of turning this into Only Fools and Horses , watch out for that caustic soda stuff. Yes, powerful stuff, giving off fumes too. Don't get on your hands. Maybe I shouldn't be concerned, but I wondered if too much MIGHT actually damage piping?

Thanks - the drain 'snake' above is a good tool...but didn't have one. ....Caustic soda didn't work....

In the end I put lots of washing up liquid in the pan, and a bucket of hot (not boiling) water with more soap suds. Repeated the process and used plunger....slowly and patiently. Eventually did it!!

Which brings me to another question. I mostly live in France and have a septic tank there. Every six months I put some 'pellets' down the toilet to keep the tank in good shape....create bacteria etc. Do they sell that stuff here?

Bacteria loves yeast. You will be usually be able to find it in the area where they sell baking flour. No matter how many additives you flush into your septic tank you will not be able to avoid pumping out your septic tank regularly. The bacteria will not be able to break down all of the solids. Ask the locals living near you who pumps out septic tanks. We have two inside bathrooms with separate tanks and one out side bathroom with one tank. The person that pumps out our tanks charges us 100 bath per tank. We have our tanks pumped out at least once a year.

If built correctly they only require pumping out every 8 to 10 years, just done mine the first time after 10 years, to help clear pipes pour a large bottle of coca cola down each sink/toilet and let soak works well for me.

Don't know where your blockage is but we recently had a bar of soap blocking one of out toilets which we couldn't shift so I asked the tank emptying guy to stick his suction hose down it and he successfully cleared it, no charge so I gave him 100bht. Bet Dynorod woiuld have charged more. One of the joys of living in Thailand .

Thanks - it's a rental house. Where I am in France, and as minimiglia said, I only need to get it emptied every 8 years or so....! Didn't realise emptying was so inexpensive so maybe will get that done....we are here until end August.

Yes they do, I've got a bag of it at home (on a visa run now) I can get a picture in a few days if you haven't bee able to find it. It was given as a present by our builder to get

However the tank should never need it as the bacteria you put into it every time you flush solids should be all you need.

Though if you are using chemical cleaners, large amounts of detergent and Caustic soda then that will poison the bacteria so you may have to use the "starter bag of goodness"

That is very cheap - it costs $100 to pump out a 7m3 tank in Vientiane. Also in Cambodia it starts at about $45, so 450 baht is very cheap. Your 21 rings must be about 7m3?

You do not need to add anything to a septic tank - the products don't do anything apart from reduce your beer money. You just need to be careful not to pour too many cleaning chemicals into the tank - disinfectant etc.

HA,reduce my beer money ,,,err hang on a minute ,,,,,,just as another note ,due to having deep well water on the property i sealed all the tanks ,( the deep well water is very good good ,but i wouldn't drink it as the nearest neighbours do ) as i was taking no chances ,so there is no seepage from the tanks ,which means i have to empty them more often, but only once a year depending on how many people are staying ,( they finally connected us to the village water system some 5 years later ,but i prefer the well , it is that good , some 35 meters down , )later in the years i met a German engineer friend who assured me it would have been fine without sealing the tanks due to the distance from the well , but i was taking no chances ,
