Pick-up sitting ban resurrected for New Year travel
A top level ministerial meeting on road safety has told the police to enforce the ban on people sitting in the back, and even the cab, of pick-ups this New Year.
Chaired by deputy premier Prawit Wongsuwan on Thursday word has gone out to police chief Jakthip Chaijinda that the government wants the ban enforced.
It was originally mooted at Songkran in April and the government ministers wanted to know what the police had actually done about that in the meantime.
Now it is felt that it would be a strong measure to limit the numbers killed on the roads again at the latest "deadly time" and Jakthip has been told they want it enforced, reported Thai Rath.
Though the Thai media said that there would be the usual round of warnings leading up to New Year.
The law states that people should not be allowed to travel in the back of pick-ups or even in the "cab" area that is actually only registered for use as carrying goods.
This does not apply to rural areas where pick-ups are used to carry produce and the other exception is "song thaews" licensed people.
Stories about the ban being enforced have been widely shared on social media as the issue could impact millions at New Year.

"This does not apply to rural areas "
Well that's ok then .... everyone outside BKK can carry on as normal

Great idea to ban it during new year, but nice to know that they couldn't give a flying fig about anyone gets killed during the rest of the year
Just a question, but are not the back of pick ups classed as "the rear" of the vehicle ........ the same "rear" where the law (even in Thailand) states that ALL PASSENGERS MUST WEAR A SEAT BELT AT ALL TIMES

I asked a relative about that law, they said its ok if 'no have seatbelt'.
I wasn't convinced either!
I know it's wrong and highly dangerous to do so, more so on the roads of Thailand, but after a long tiring day out somewhere I like to lie down in the back of a pickup on the way home. It's generally where the left over tinnies are that obviously have to be finished before arriving home.

I know for a fact there are NEVER any left over tinnies (or bottles of Whisky) in Thailand ...... they will ALL be carefully placed in a pocket or bag and taken away by whoever managed to have hold of them last

Re: U Turn
Doing a bit more search , i now find some are implimenting the Law ,re sitting in the back of trucks , also motorcycle helmets etc , it would seem each province is setting it's variation/interpretation of the law over the festive season, so the reasoning would be ,Helmets at all times ( even in bed ) no persons in the back of trucks, upto you ,

Re: Pick-up sitting ban resurrected for New Year travel
Many a time in the "distant" past 4-6 of us would climb into the back of a pick-up in Nong Khai complete with a bottle of Saeng Som, Soda Ice & Glasses to return to udon Thani in time for the Horse Racing. After the racing it was back to "Steve's Bar" where we would spend our winnings. Yes, memories are made of this. Don't think I could climb into the back of a pick - up now, let alone fall out at the destination. All good clean fun, just ask 'er inside!

Re: U Turn
The next time we'll hear of this ban is ahead of Songkran 2018 where it will also be rescinded with a few days to go... exactly the same as last year.Hoopoe wrote: ↑December 20, 2017, 12:50 amhttp://bit.ly/2BH2GNP

Re: Pick-up sitting ban resurrected for New Year travel
As far as I am aware tam, the Thai word for RESOLVE is "200 Baht" at least thats what the nice officer usually says when a problem needs to be resolved
Re: Pick-up sitting ban resurrected for New Year travel
well, those driving up to Issan can always put down many straw mats and cushions in the back of the truck then tie a tarp over it. Out of sight, out of mind!!

It is ironical that the other famous country with lax road safety laws, allowing riding in the back of pickups (with some local restrictions), is the USA .....
