UK 1 Pound Coin

Post by Galee » August 10, 2017, 9:43 pm

Anyone else like me and has a pocket full of soon to be illegal 1 pound coins?.

The best use I can think for them is a golf ball marker.

I'll give you my sister's address in England & you can send 'em to her. \:D/

The new ones will look like a large threepenny bit, won't they?

Yes. It's only the old round 1 pound coin being withdrawn.

UK banks will still take them, just can't use them in shops. Not sure illegal is the right word!

In Hartlepool they use them to throw at referees ... in Scunny all the local youths are collecting them for a donation to the victims of a recent slag heep avalanche on Motlash Hill ..

Didnt know it was being taken out of circulation ???

The Bart is illegal at the moment with its exchange rate.the one pound coin is just being taken out of circulation probably because of fakes.as for any northerners throwing pound coins around,I doubt it very much.more like 15 mm washers.

I think Gallee meant no longer legal currency to exchange, apparently the banks will still credit them at face value but you can't spend them . An interesting note on this change over was the Bank of England estimated there were over 5 million forgeries in circulation of the old one but the new one is harder( impossible) their words not mine, to forge.
Ageing is a privilige denied to many .

Although it's the same size so it can still be used in vending machines etc (defeats the object a bit in my opinion), it's a different weight as we found out at the bank when Mrs N had painstakingly sorted & bagged her stash of change. The teller told us £1 old & new coins couldn't be mixed in bags

Now the old £10 note...
Old £10 note to disappear next year
http://www.bbc.com/news/business-41974386
If you still have any old £10 notes, make sure you spend them before 1 March next year.

The Bank of England has announced that the old paper notes, featuring naturalist Charles Darwin, will no longer be legal tender after that date.

Its days have been numbered since the new polymer tenner, depicting author Jane Austen, entered circulation in September.

But the old note can still be exchanged by the Bank after the cut-off date.

Reminds me of a time many years ago when my dad had the job of clearing a deceased relatives house. He found a stash of about 20 White Five Pound Notes neatly rolled up ................. and took them to the bank to exchange them.
I went mad when I found out that he had received 5 quid for each from the bank, as if he had walked 50 yds further down the road the Coin and stamp dealer would have given him at least 10 times that amount  (bet I know what the bank teller was doing during his lunch hour that day)

No Timmy, not until about August.
I went last July & returned with £60 of the old tenners. :(
I am off to Vietnam later this week so I will try & change the old tenners for Vietnamese Dong in the airport. Problem could be that they are not exactly in pristine condition & while they would be accepted anywhere in the UK the money changers can often refuse even small blemishes on notes...

They will still be changed by banks in the UK. And, like the one pound coins, some larger shops may still accept them for a period.

I looked at changing my 'old' tenners for Vietnamese Dong at the airport.
That was really a 'no deal' as they would only change them for baht & then re-exchange the baht for Dong - not a good deal. The hotel in Da Nang happily exchanged them for me though.. :D

If you still have them when I go back to the UK next year - July/August - then I will take them back with me & exchange them for the new ones at a bank .
No charge, except maybe a small Leo M.. :D
