Don't Worry, Bee Happy

Post by parrot » March 5, 2014, 2:58 pm

From time to time, I go through the mental drill of asking: is it worth it living in the countryside......18km away from the sights and sounds of the city......nearer to my desired daily bowl of Vietnamese noodle soup?
But on weeks like this one, I remind myself why living in the countryside is worth it. Our gardener smoked up two barrels of charcoal....mango, santol, tamarind, and small plum wood. And he uncovered two bee hives in bamboo bushes.......enough for 4 quarts of honey and handfuls of honey laden hive to munch on. I can't think of anything much sweeter than a chunk of bee hive, freshly plucked and drowning in dry season honey. It's the time of the year that Thais say the honey is at its best.....and with the abundance of Chromolaena odorata weeds (สาบเลือ) (white-flowering ubiquitous weeds during the dry season) this year, the honey is not only sweet.....but Thais say it's good for most all that ails you. Our gardener says there are two more hives still to pluck.
Oh yeah, back to downtown.......I doubt my neighbors would be impressed if I took my aquifer showers outdoors. Here, in the countryside, the bees, birds, and insects don't seem to mind.

So how often does the old boy extract honey, once a year?

It sounds absolutely wonderful. What a nice discovery.

I equate the taste of fresh, raw honey to the sensation of tasting a great scotch....peat, leather, caramel, oak, smoke, figs, black cherries..........honey is all the flowers and herbs and fruits and woods all packed into one fingerful. Zen
