Re: Powdered Milk
Regarding not knowing if its Full Cream Milk Powder or Skim Milk Powder by sight, generally Full cream especially from Oz and NZ tends to have a cream/yellowish colour whilst SMP is generally white. The yellowish colour comes through the fat from the chlorophyll in the grass on which the cattle are fed. This is why butter from Australasia is more yellow than butter from other origins which barn feed their cows on concentrates through the winter.

hI Funman, thankyou for a very helpfull reply.thanksFunman wrote:Sure can. All purpose, bread, cake, dark rye and wheat are readily available as well as yeast, baking soda and baking powder. There is a baking specialty supply house that also stocks "special" types of flours but is beyond my budget. Depending on where you buy the standard stuff and what kind it can range from 20B a Kg to 65B a Kg. I have a place I go where I can buy all purpose for 20B a Kg and bread and cake flour for 34B a Kg.
Re: Powdered Milk
Macro are worth a look on the flour front. They sell a few different varieties in different sizes. Don't know how they compare to a specialist place, but I suspect that it is pretty basic fare, but at a competitive price!!
Corn Syrup
Shado,Shado wrote:That's another one Funman. Have looked many times in many places. Cannot find lite corn syrup. I sometimes make syrup using sugar and water but that syrup will not substitute for the corn syrup (Kayro) you are talking about. Lots of pancake syrup available, but that's about it.
You still looking for corn syrup?
Chern Chims has Golden Syrup, which can be used as a corn syrup substitute.

He can also get molasses (Black Treacle), but he's out I just bought his last can.

Re: Powdered Milk
Thanks papaguido; I was in Chern Chim last Monday and actually looked at the syrup that Jon had on the shelves. And yes, it would substitute for corn syrup. I made a mental note of the availabilty, but didn't buy any.
Appreciate the "heads up".

Re: Powdered Milk
Without wishing to be too inquisitive Papa what are you using molasses (Black Treacle) for?
The only thing I can ever remember seeing it being used for was by my mother, to make a favourite of my father - a flat three quarter inch thick 'biscuit/cake' from North West England called Parkin - the 2 basic ingredients being oats & black treacle.
After it had just been cooked it was concrete like in texture, but the longer it was kept it became chewier & chewier...

Re: Powdered Milk
I've been doing a bit of baking trying to come up with some treats for my kids and me (I haven't met a cookie I didn't like). Anyway, I wanted to try my hand at ginger bread cookies, which I've been craving, and the recipe calls for molasses. Also, molasses is used in some BBQ recipes.BobHelm wrote:Without wishing to be too inquisitive Papa what are you using molasses (Black Treacle) for?

BH,
Curiosity got the best of me and I googled Parkin recipes, turns out Parkin is similar to Ginger bread.
Here are a few links:

Re: Powdered Milk
That is the stuff Papa!!
If you & the kids like it fresh, fair enough, but it is worthwhile keeping some in an airtight tin for a month or so - completely different texture then & kinder on the teeth!!

Re: Powdered Milk
It has been more than 10 years since this tread last came to a stop. I am looking for dry whole milk powder. I remember seeing some at Big C a couple of years ago and am still kicking myself for not buying something. Has anybody found dry whole milk powder in the area recently?
Re: Powdered Milk
Is Coffee Mate same same? Just wonder!
Re: Powdered Milk
The Chinese shop on the other side of the road to Makro has it you have to search though it is a bit of a junk shop.

Re: Powdered Milk
This is amazing! Thank you all. I will check those out.
About Coffee Mate: It contains some milk derivatives but it is mostly other things.
I need to add a little milk powder to milk and yogurt culture to get firmer yogurt. Have used baby formula in the past by didn't like having all of the additives in there.

Re: Powdered Milk
The chinese bakery shop opposite Big C/Makro has a selection of milk powders, full, skimmed and flavoured.
Probably at a better price as well.
Ask for phong nom.
