Best time to exercise and best ways to exercise

Post by tamada » June 5, 2022, 8:59 am

Here's a couple of takes on the same recent study that suggests differing benefits for males and females depending on whether they exercise in the morning or the evening. There's a conflict between the sample numbers being quoted and subtly different emphasis on what each author determines as the most beneficial sort of exercise or what the goals are, ie. weight loss or general fitness.

I would assume that most members with any sort of exercise regimen eschew the local gyms and go walking, jogging or cycling in the cooler morning hours. Others may have a treadmill or some sort of facility at home like a treadmill? It would be interesting to read of different exercise regimens and what works for you. I ride a bike early morning for at least 10 km/1 hour every second day but that's been hit by the school's reopening. Starting earlier may be an option since seasonal late afternoon rains are making a mess of everything. The earlier dawn is favorable but would mean earlier to bed as well so a re-jigging of supper time.

Exercise should begin with our grey matter, even if there is a shortage of rusty brain cells circulating in the cranium.

My departed ex-wife used to say “if they had more than two brain cells between them, they could be dangerous”

Rather than pontificating for countless hours in our armchair, absorbing mind-boggling codswallop on the “box”, while encouraging lard-like proportions, we should take a walk, swim or cycle, etc., all of which assist blood circulation and oxygen intake.

A possible downside, however, is the stimulation of thought processes which might promote an outpouring of inane comments. ‘Note to self”, always engage the brain before applying ink to paper, ha ha ha.

Of course, I’m fishing for comments….

How about, "If you had another brain cell, it would be lonely." I think Eric Morcambe said that to Ernie Wise.

Walking is good but recreational walking in Thailand can be perilous due to soi dogs (kittens are ok).

Fishing's OK too as long as it's not ice-hole fishing.

(kinda) Back on topic, anyone out there with an under-used treadmill that needs a new home?

Weight training and the brain (I think it was a 2020 study):
Australian researchers have for the first time shown that weights training can protect the parts of the brain vulnerable to Alzheimer's disease ...

Professor Valenzuela said there was a clear message that "resistance exercise needs to become a standard part of dementia risk-reduction strategies".
