"Thailand 'not able to stop the spread' of new coronavirus

SUBTITLE: As face masks sell out, people say "information is so hidden" and "we don't know the whole picture".

Subtle changes are seeping into daily life in Bangkok.

Thermal scanners now stand at the doors of luxury malls and attendants pump disinfectant into the hands of visitors as they stream in.

With 14 cases, Thailand now has the highest confirmed number of coronavirus infections outside China and people are starting to worry.

"It's spreading so fast and the information is so hidden, we don't know the whole picture," young mother Cathy told me.

Even her four-year-old son obediently wears a surgical mask.

"I'm worried that I'll get sick and stay in hospital and there isn't a vaccine," commuter Nan added.

Already popular because of pollution, face masks are selling out.

Thailand is a top foreign holiday destination for tourists from Wuhan.

About 22,000 people from the city at the centre of the coronavirus outbreak have visited in January alone.

Six new cases were confirmed today, five of them involving a family from China's Hubei province, and the sixth from Chongqing province.

While all arrivals from China will now be screened and thermal scanned for signs of the disease, the coronavirus is believed to be contagious during the incubation period.

Thus it is feared that while visitors may not have any symptoms, they could in theory be spreading the infection.

That concern is helping to prompt criticism of the government's response to the crisis.

People from China should have been required to be in quarantine for 15 days where ever they land outside of China. This was not and will not be done so I am afraid it is going to get very bad. My Thai wife was supposed to fly to
Thailand next month but I am urging her to cancel. Flights from here and back have mostly Chinese on them and it is just too easy to pick up a disease in a plane with so many other people and such a long flight. Some are thinking this won't be so bad but I disagree, even the Chinese government is taking very big steps to try to contain this. They are very worried.
Get over yourself, 3500 people die each year from the FLU in Canada, and 12200 are hospitalized, better lock yourselves in the house, just to be safe!!! LOL

PS The CDC estimates that as many as 56,000 people die from the flu or flu-like illness each year.
This is not the flu and we do not know how bad it is going to get, judging from the way China is reacting it will be very serious. if you are bored why don't you take a holiday to China. Lots of flight and hotel deals now.
That's my point Dick Tracy.....the FLU is more deadly, yet we dismiss it.
Enjoy your holiday in Wuhan, post some pictures. Sincerely Dick.
Well at least we agree that you are a DICK. =D>

This virus can be passed through the eyes so these surgical masks can only do so much even if they are of high quality.
Probably the best advice is to avoid crowded areas like shopping malls, supermarkets and temples.
If you need to go to the supermarket make it once every 2 weeks for a big shop and go early before the crowds arrive.
Personal hygiene like washing your hands thoroughly to avoid bacteria.
Bear in mind, also, the lousy air quality in Udon Thani, currently.
Its still at pm2.5 and the safe measurement for Thailand is pm50.
You are more likely to catch a respiratory illness,at present, that wont be the Coronavirus.
Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

Must agree on the surgical mask not helping as a preventive measure. News today had info from CDC that mask was only useful for those with symptoms. During peak FLU season my Dr's office has masks at entrance for those with symptoms.

This new strain of coronavirus has killed 170 people so far, all of them in China. More than 8,000 total cases have been reported worldwide, although experts believe that total is underestimated.

By comparison, this year's flu season has killed 8,200 people, with at least 15 million cases — and that's just in the U.S.

Just remember the numbers given by newtovillagelife for the Flu are just a guess by CDC based on reports and figuring using past years counts, so may go up or down, but still a lot.

Think what you may but this a serious situation. China does not like to waste money and they are losing billions of dollars already from this virus and the precautions that are being taken. As well they have literally quarantined 26 million people and limited travel for many more. I hope I am wrong but I feel this is going to get a lot worse. The WHO has just declared this a world emergency.

And of course you do realize these numbers are Just For The US. I believe the flu is worldwide.

Something to consider. This is an excerpt from npr.org dated 29 Jan. 2020.

Another important reminder: The CDC recommends a pneumococcal vaccine for children under 2, for adults who are 65 or older, for people who smoke and for those who have certain medical conditions.

It's not that this vaccine will directly fight the pneumonia caused by influenza or the new coronavirus; the pneumococcal vaccine actually revs the body's defenses against a different microbe — the common bacterium Streptococcus pneumonia – that also causes pneumonia.

However, one of the main reasons some people get very sick from flu is that, once infected and weakened by the influenza virus, they are extra vulnerable to getting a secondary infection from bacteria — and often, it's the pneumococcal bacteria.

For an historical perspective: It was actually bacterial pneumonia that caused the most deaths during the 1918 influenza pandemic, according to the National Institutes of Health.

By fending off those bacteria, the pneumococcal vaccine can be an important part of a flu defense — and might also help in fending off the new coronavirus strain.

"We don't know whether this new coronavirus tends to predispose people toward pneumococcal infection, but many respiratory viruses do," explains Marc Lipsitch, an infectious disease epidemiologist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

"It [would be] better to be infected with only coronavirus, rather than the coronavirus and a bacterium at the same time," Lipsitch says.

The science of why that's true is complicated, Lipsitch says, but in general, when we get a virus, "the immune system is distracted." It focuses on fighting the virus, and that makes it harder to fend off a bacterial infection. "It's hard [for the immune system] to do both at once."

The first person to person coronavirus transmission in the U.S. has been reported. A wife who went to China in December has transmitted the virus to husband after her return this month. Both individuals are currently hospitalized.

YAWN.

More than 700 people are killed in road accidents across China EVERY DAY, according to the World Health Organisation. The WHO estimates that traffic accident claim about 260,000 DEATHS on the mainland each year, of which with 60 per cent are vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.

Driving should be banned in CHINA, people are dying in droves, time to PANIC!!!!!

The difference between Bad Drivers in China and this Virus is that the Chinese drivers are not migrating to other countries as is the Virus
The World Health Organization has not proclaimed "Coronavirus: WHO declares ‘unprecedented outbreak’ a global emergency" but not on Drivers as of yet

The comparison is not valid in this situation
