Be careful about the PSA test it is misleading. It's been known to give false positives. There are medicines out there to relax the prostate. As your A man getting older you will have prostate problems. It's the nature of the beast.Good luck.

Don't underestimate this disease

Mate of mine ( under 50 ) never thought he needed to worry, even with a few signs and symptoms etc

Radical surgery 3 months later, retrograde CA, and aggressive

Sadly, Injections, Medications , etc, and he cant shag anymore.

Fear of a digital examination, which is more reliable as its a physical examination of the actual prostrate should easily be ignored and be undertaken.

Remember this is proactive medicine and not about a social stigma.

Its a lot easier than being spread open for a Pap Smear

Yes, women have it tougher. I'm a sook but I've had the finger examination twice in the last 18 months. I have a Chinese female GP about my age. I'm 51 before some of you let your imagination go wild. I'm pleased she's not a 30 year old steroid enlarged sportsman doctor.

I think it will get easier each time. I still find it stressful. My blood pressure readings aren't so good if the glove is about to be put on ...

I had annual flight physicals while in the AF. One day, in the twilight of my military career, I faced a visiting flight surgeon from another base. She was a captain and a doll. She went through her routine of checking heartbeats, glands, ears, eyes, then told me to line up and drop the flight suit. Okay, I'd been through the drill many times before.......but as my back faced her and my bottom was exposed, I heard the distinct twang of a rubber glove.....at which point she said....ever so softly, "Has anyone told you I have the longest fingernails on the base?" And before I could respond, it was all over. Prostrate was in good working order.

Luckily (according to statistics) men generally die with Prostrate Cancer not from it - I know, tell that to the unlucky ones
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left

it's not so bad morti....well when it's over that is. don't let fear stop you it's very importent to have it checked if you have any worries. worrying about it will give you stress .theres nothing to fear but fear itself. some guys have it done weekly just for fun.

man up Morti.. its not as if you will turn gay or anything because of it..

My old SAS mate died of prostrate cancer, and he was begging to be topped off before the end, friggin horrible way for a man to go. Even my dad had it..so Mate, get the finger and get over it..its what doctors are for..

heck I had the hell hubble bubble trubble scope up the arse, driven by what seemed like some sort of white coated hydraulic operator, while a small grandstand full of pop corn munching med students looked on, and with everything on 3D panoramic color monitors, like it was some sort of Jules Verne ' Fantasy Vovage ' movie, and your worried about one doctor and a finger..just do it Matey...it will be all over before you can snap your fingers.

Mortiboy.
You need to go to the local hospital now not tomorrow. You have a bladder full of fluid which is over full now if you have not peed by now.
I had a similar situation in Australia about 8 years ago.
A heavy night on the booze did not pee close to 18 hours.
Went to local hospital in a fair amount of pain because of extended bladder, result straight into emergency pain killer in one leg muscle relaxant in the other.
Next a catheter up the pidler and instant relief. You will need to have this. Communication is hard here but make sure that they dont release all the fluid straight away the doctor told me if I did that bladder can collapse and cause hemorrhaging.
Went home let a bit more piddle out and fell asleep not turning tap off had a few specs of blood in bag in the morning.

Went on to have op and survive to this day.

THINK IF ANYBODY READING THIS HAS MORTIBOYS PH NO THAT THEY SHOULD RING HIM NOW.
If in discomfort and pain now he should get to hospital now.

Most older men get enlarged prostate. They checked mine using Ultrasound, (instead of the finger) which suited me.

If it is enlarged there are Meds to shrink the prostate. I was given Xatral- XL (slow release tabs) - 10mg once a day.

A basic/initial check for prostate cancer (something different) involves a blood test to check the PSA reading.

So yes I would recommend going to see the local hospital's Urologist asap. The sooner the better,

Good on ya Mort for deciding to go..
I sense you are worried not so much from the finger, but the answer they give you afterwards..
thats understandable, and I have been in that same situation too
but good or bad news, we are all here for you Mate, so dont forget that..

When my PSA level was checked a few years ago it was higher then my doctor wanted to see. To be sure I had a enlarged prostate(finger method test). Before doing anything further he had a recheck of PSA level done again in 2 weeks. It was still high and I was referred to a Urologist. The Urologist reviewed the test, and did the finger check again, and had 2 recommendations. 1. To go in and take a snip or 3 off prostate and check for cancer cells or 2. start taking Proscar 5mg (helps shrink prostate) once a day and recheck PSA in 3 months. I took option 2 and my PSA levels were down to normal levels, and have stayed down now for going on 3 years. Per the Urologists if there was cancer in prostate the PSA levels would have remained high even while on the Proscar.

dont want the guy stewing, and feeling isolated and alone, if the news from the doctor was not what he was hoping..

Why Thanks Makka. Heres how it went.
I was to go to The "Army Hospital alone. But shows there are some caring people here.
Ex wife got to know and took me .
On arrival was told urologist not there until 4 pm
So after long wait finally got seen.
As not pee'd for over two days, Needed a caffeter fitted
Well, ever had one fitted? Is It I Not a man or what?
Are they Sadists there?
They could not insert it fully. When got to the Prostate, come to a halt!
Like coming to the end of a tunnel!
Because Prostate so large the pee hole squeezed up!
So if not enough going through a excruciating pain, (Nearly pulled out my remaining hair)
Tried five times.Then gave up!
Advised me to go Aek Udon.To see specialist
As The fees there are expensive ,They said Udon Hospital will be as good.
Now 7 pm Arrive Udon hospital I see a doctor who spoke perfect English
Said very dangerous to not release the urine.
Advised me to book in there.
Finally after examination and X ray ect,(already done at other hospital)
End up in the ward.
Next thing a Angel of a nurse arrives with a trolley.
On top of trolley is I can see the dreaded Tube of death!
"Here we go again" I said ....." No worry be Ok I gentle"
But you know she did first time, and not so painful!
So Today I see urologist.Tells me Ok to go home.
So loaded with medication, told come back in a week
Caffeter stay put.
This Udon Hospital is OK. Thais say it no good. But Everything was excellent
Very professional! Staff so friendly and caring.
Anyway, through my stubborn not listening to people. went through unnecessary pain
Had I listened when symptoms first appeared,I would have been OK.
So lesson learnt.
if anyone get that symptom difficult urinate. Get checked out EARLY!
You have been warned!
