Acupuncture
Acupuncture
I have read the topic about it but as it is a bit outdated I would like to ask for an update.
Any advice on acupuncturists in/around Udon?
I'm having back problems and apart from the wonderful advice: you have to lose weight I have experienced wonderful results with acupuncture back in Europe.
Thanks for any advice!

Re: Acupuncture
Joe, the Physical Therapy Dept. at AEK Udon used acupuncture on my arm to reduce pain after a broken collar bone. It was a new fangled "Electronic Acupuncture Machine" not the traditional needles but I was assured it was the same principle. (And it was administered by a pretty little therapist rather than a withered old Chinese lady, not that that should make any difference ). Seriously, she knew what she was doing, and they had acupuncture charts on the wall, indicating that this is a viable treatment there.
The cost was 480 baht for 20 minutes on the machine and about 20 more minutes of manipulation/exercise. So you might check them out if nothing else develops locally.

Thanks Jimbo.
Of course it makes a difference if a pretty little therapist does it
Out of curiosity: did she do the manipulation/exercise too? And what exactly was manipulated/exercised?
Seriously, I had heard about AEK but was not sure they would practise the Chinese acupuncture.
Thanks again
Joe
Re: Acupuncture
They advertise a Chinese Medical Clinic at AEK, but I was in the standard PT department.
Yes, the same little girl manipulated the muscles and tendons in my arm and shoulder and did some exercise with weights on my arm. AND THAT'S ALL!

Re: Acupuncture
I used the AEK PT department for ongoing PT on a work related tendonitis on my elbow.
It wasnt responding well and after 1 month, they recomended, acupunture, to be done by the Ortho specialist .
Armed with his new pkt of needles, he proceeded to insert a few down the anterior asoect of the arm, no issues.
Then out of the blue , a jab to the elbow, resulted in him hitting my ulna nerve directly !! like a high voltage electric shock down the arm, causing me to scream and loose all sensation to my fingers and partial sensation loss to my hand. Apart from nearly passing out with the neurogenic pain he just walked away , and left me .
The cute assistants , did there best to settle the situation and took my BP which wasnt good ! and after 30-45 mins, i choose to sit up and test the BP again.
NO sign of the Consultant, he had done a runner and didnt even return to see what he had done.
The sensation slowly returned and i left the PT department, a very sore and sorry patient.
Oh the Consultant told the cashier not to charge me.
No his treatment didnt work and another 3 months of PT finally paid off .

Re: Acupuncture
You scared me Wazza!
That is the problem I have with acupuncture in a hospital, they are likely not specialists in this old Chinese medicine and any ortho specialist or other specialist can do more harm than good.
I need an acupuncture specialist, preferably Chinese and doing acupuncture as a main activity, it's not a hobby, it's a very serious technique that only real specialists can perform.
Thanks anyway Wazza for your report.

Re: Acupuncture
Is there a market for alternative medicine in UT?
Re: Acupuncture
With the (growing) number of expats, combined with part of the Thai population that uses it already, there should be a market for alternative medicine, not the whole range but selective parts of it like acupuncture, acupressure, TCM (traditional Chinese medicine), homeopathy (favorite of mine), Ayurveda, Reiki etc.petemcc wrote:Is there a market for alternative medicine in UT?
I personally know the merits of homeopathy and acupuncture and am highly interested in TCM as part of it is food supplements to cure or prevent certain discomforts.
I hope some day we will be able to get alternative medicine in Udon =D>

Re: Acupuncture
That's encouraging for me, I think! I was considering doing courses in either naturopathy or just acupuncture, 3 years and a load of dollars, but it may be a means to an end for me finding something financially productive in UT, mind you being able to practice legally with all the red tape may be another hurdle.SanukJoe wrote:With the (growing) number of expats, combined with part of the Thai population that uses it already, there should be a market for alternative medicine, not the whole range but selective parts of it like acupuncture, acupressure, TCM (traditional Chinese medicine), homeopathy (favorite of mine), Ayurveda, Reiki etc.petemcc wrote:Is there a market for alternative medicine in UT?

There is one place where I have been many times In Nong Samrong. Coming from Nong Khai there is a small Soi to your left and just like 100 meters down this Soi on your right. This Soi is just before the big road from Nong Samrong comes out to Rd 2, which will be on your right coming from Nong Khai. GPS 17,449514 102, 793994

Re: Acupuncture
This old lady is pretty good and not expensive. She was a communist supporter back during the Vietnam War so the authorities still keep an eye on her, is what I've heard. When you're driving south back toward Udon from Do Home or Home Hub on the Nong Kai highway, turn left at the blinking yellow light--about 100 meters past the CalTex station on your right.lassebasse wrote:There is one place where I have been many times In Nong Samrong. There was also a young lady acupuncturist at Aek Udon who I saw many times. Basement level same area as the physical therapy room. Not sure if she's still there.
Another place is on Srisuk not too far from Makeang Market. This lady is a bit rough; her needles caused me a lot of pain.
