Things to do, places to go around Udon Thani:

- Tale Bua Dang; “The Red Lotus Sea”.. 40KM Southeast of Udon is a large freshwater basin known as Han Khumpawapi. This lake has thousands of blooming Red Lotus’s in the late December through mid-February time frame. The boat landing is located here (Flash Earth) http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=17.21277 ... =0&src=msa You can hire a large canopied boat for an hour plus tour for around 400 Baht. The boat will hold 10 adults. Life preservers are provided. To get there you can go south of Rte 2 about 30km and turn left at Ban Nadi. A blue sign is there showing the red lotus. You can also go east on Rte 22 (Sakon Nakon Highway) about 15km east of Udon and you will again see the Red Lotus marker signs pointing the way.

- Khumpawapi “monkey village”. The central Khumpawapi village park has a large troop of monkeys that’s worth a short day trip. Khumpawapi is located approximately 45km SE of Udon. To get there drive south on Rte 2 approximately 40km to the Khumpawapi stop light. Turn left and drive approximately 10-12km east to Khumpawapi village.. The park is in the center of town. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=udon+tha ... d&t=m&z=15

- Phu Foil Lom “Eco-Park” a royally sponsored park with a restaurant, camping and hiking trails located approximately 75km southwest of Udon. You can get there by traveling west from Udon to Rte 2313 and following the signs south to the park or drive on Rte 2 directly south to the Khumpawapi intersection, do a U-Turn and drive west on the rural route near the intersection. Phu Foi Lom direction signs are at all intersections.

- Suan Khao Kwang Zoo: About 45 miles south of Udon east of Rte 2. Left at the stop light and 10 kilometers back into the hills https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_ ... vince.html

- Dinosaur Park/Museum Udon: about 35 kilometers west of Udon towards Nong Bua Lamphu. Worth a short visit just for the animatronic T-Rex.. http://www.udonthaniattractions.com/fossil-museum.html

- Kham Chanot island Temple: about an hour and a half ride from Udon just northeast of Ban Dung. Lately extremely popular with hordes of Thais from Bangkok that have made weekend visits a two hour queue just to get into the temple https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wat_Kham_Chanot

- Cobra Village: About 50 miles south of Udon turning left in Nam Phong before the river bridge.. Out about 10km or so east of Rte 2. This village is famous for making its living raising and training Cobras for shows around Thailand. https://www.tourismthailand.org/Attract ... lage--3478
-

- UbolRatana Lake and Dam: Located about 55 miles south on Rte 2 from Udon and about 12 miles west of Rte 2 is the Ubol Ratana dam and lake. Things to see are of course the dam, the neatly tended grounds of EGAT at the dam, the Bang Saen “beach” south of the dam on the eastern shores of the lake and a temple overlooking the lake. https://www.tourismthailand.org/Attract ... a-Dam--850

- Ban Na Kha silk weaving village: located about 25 kilometers north of Udon on Rte 2 the village is a “storefront” for hand woven silk clothing made in villages east of the highway.. http://www.udonthaniattractions.com/na- ... llage.html

- Phu Phrabat National Park: located about and hour and forty minutes northwest of Udon Thani and west of Ban Phue. The park is worth a good half a day’s walking particularly in the cool season. Great trails, fantastical rock formations and Buddhist ruins plus actual bronze age cave paintings. http://www.udonthaniattractions.com/phu ... -park.html

- Wat Phu Tok: About a 2.5 hour ride east and then northeast of Udon in Beung Khan Province. These temple grounds are built on a 400 meter tall limestone escarpment that is circled with bridge walkways attached to the cliffs. It entails a lot of walking and climbing of stairs but is a magnificent place to visit.. Due to the many stairs I’d not recommend it for a visit during the rainy or hot seasons. http://www.udonthaniattractions.com/wat-phu-tok.html

- Sala Kaeo Khu Nong Khai http://www.udonthaniattractions.com/sala-kaew-ku.html

- Chiang Kham in Nong Khai Province , touristy village on the Mekong about 2 hours west of Nong Khai.. Has a hippie vibe...

and many other places..!!!

Just an update - the peak popularity and long queues are well into the past.

It will probably take another major lottery win, based on numbers found on the trunk of a Kham Chanot towering palm tree, plus a TV series, to get back to the glory days.

Which is probably too late for the numerous investmentors in food places and other attractions which sprung up based on the boom, but which now stand shuttered, abandoned and/or derelict.

Drive up to ChiangKhan, spend the night on the river, then drive to PhuRua via the Mekong and back roads through the mountains. Spend the night in PhuRua. Best done in the cool months and not on a weekend or long Thai holiday.

Erawan Mountain (cave).....790ish steps up to the mouth of the cave, explore to the other side of the mountain. If your timing is right (noonish), you'll see drops of water that seep through the limestone ceiling and fall 50 or so feet onto the stalagmite floor. The sunlight coming through the hole in the ceiling lights up the water drops like diamonds.

drove up to Kham Chanot today arriving about noon time. Haven't been up there since 2014. Major changes. All people arriving must go through the queu,e be issued a ticket and wait for their block of tickets to be called to go to the island.. Wait was about 30 minutes. The island sanctuary itself was changed a bit from my last visit. No more gongs hanging to bong or for some talented folks to run their hands around and make those gongs sing.. The Naga pool, changed from last time is musty and crusty. A wooden elevated walkway about a meter above the ground goes around the perimeter of the island, about a 450 meters walk.. Overall, not too crowded due to them only allowing groups of 50 to enter every 30 minutes. Masses of tourist items and "lucky" lotter ticket sellers in orderly rows near the dragon bridge to the island...
I expect this four day weekend will see much larger crowds.
