PCR Test

Post by JohnKing » January 9, 2022, 2:01 pm

Where would be the best place to get a PCR Test in Udon Thani with a result in 48 or 72 hours for when I have to return to work?
Thank You!

My info is 6 months out of date but then BKK hospital was a good option with results guaranteed the same day if you got tested in the morning.

For now remember to double check the requirements of the country you are going to AND any stopover on the way.

Lots of countries now only needing a rapid test on arrival.

It was 4900 baht eight months ago for the drive-thru experience. Swabbed around 10 a.m., results emailed around 8 p.m. same day.

I emailed BHU earlier for the latest PCR test info and rates. No response as yet.

The cost of THB6,500 is ridiculous IMO. Where I am the cost is capped by the government at max of approx THB3,000.

Shocking. Almost 33% increase since last May. More inexplicable when it's cheaper at other branches of Bangkok Hospitals.

Since I have to fly through BKK anyway, I am leaning towards using Samitivej Sukhumvit in Bangkok. Their charge is 4000 baht with a certificate that includes the QR code that some health authorities seem to require. Tack on 2 nights at a nearby 3-star flop and it's almost the same price as our local highwaymen.

PCR test seems to be available in Bangkok for a far more reasonable cost of THB2600 here:

https://www.thaitravelclinic.com/FrontN ... -en-2.html

Test one day, pick up certificate (if you need original) next day.

Another one in Bangkok, offering prices between ~THB4300 (7 hour turnaround), THB3000 (same day) and THB2800 (next day).

Various options here:

Here is a list of accredited labs in Udon - I have no idea if they do PCR testing however. May be worth checking direct if interested.

You can also search for nearby provinces.

The Toronto District School Board gave me 5 of these tests for free just before the Christmas holidays. Now the government said it is not necessary to use them since they are highly inaccurate. Instead the government has advised that if you have the symptoms of a cold or the flu, assume you have the variant, and stay at home for five days. Okay.

Those will be the antigen tests? I grabbed a 7-pack free from the NHS before I left UK. They're still part of the UK'S self-test although they've also reduced the 10-day self isolation + daily self-test to 7-days + two -ve antigen tests on two consecutive days. The UK's primary instruction for those feeling crook is also to stay home.

Who said specifically they are "highly" inaccurate? The local school board, local, province or national government?

Yes, the Rapid Antigen Screening Kit. The provincial government, and the Toronto District School Board all said it is no longer necessary to take the test. I was wrong about the accuracy of the tests...I think. However, the government has indicated that scarcity of the kits will mean that only certain sectors of the public will need to use them. People are advised that if they experience symptoms associated with covid, they should self-isolate. I thought I heard differently on the radio, but I haven't seen an article to support my earlier claim yet.

Anyway, this is the latest: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/ ... -1.6306301

The UK also had a momentary shortage of the RTK test kits so they started a system at the pharmacies where they were still free but you had to register before getting the kit instead of just walking in and getting one with no questions asked. Not sure if the registration entailed using apps and the like. When I got mine on the eve of departure, the lass behind the counter explained the new system but said she would do the registration for me, scanned the barcode on the packet and handed it to me.

I think several countries have questioned the efficacy of these tests, typically when justifying a restriction on people from another country where PCR testing is more challenging and RTK is best they can do. More recently it's a cover-arse for having rubbish logistics. Part of Covid politics I guess.

I pressed BHU on the 33% increase which is explained as follows:

"Our hospital has sent the two specimen to run the test in order to prevent the fault positive result.

This only apply for the traveler case as it is time limitation to repeat the second test in case that first test showing positive."

Make of that what you will.

MedConsult in Bangkok were my backup option. They only charge 2000 baht for same-day turnaround.

Their website has an interesting comment on false positive and re-testing which they don't appear to charge extra for. It appears that the issue of imprecise lab results may be common.
