Yes, I'm thanking you will have to go to Bangkok.

You will only need one trip if you have your old Passport cancelled at the interview and the new one mailed to you.

Not backward in coming forward with the charges these days.

Thanks for that BD, being in my eighties and suffering severe emphysema puts a real downer on the amount of travel I can do.I can only wear a Covid mask for short periods.
I realise it takes two trips to do the renewal in Laos as you need the passport to re-enter at Nong Khai but two shorter trips is easier for me than one big one

mandatory $50,000 COVID insurance for people entering Thailand at the moment.
I'd guess those two things won't help the border opening anytime soon

Even if the border was open, is it not still 14 days Q for entry by land?

Don't know. But because foreigners cannot enter by land into Laos, I'm sure they have no quarantine requirements in place.

Since all land borders are closed to normal travellers there is no answer

I understand Vientiane is under a 24 hour total lockdown to try and curb the number of Covid infections. This from my brother-in-law's Lao wife who has family in Vientiane.

I've got friends up in Vientiane too. They says, yes, there is a government 100% "lockdown". They also laughed about it and said it is more ignored than obeyed.. I imagine if you want to travel there legally you'd have to coordinate with the Lao Consulate in Khon Khean to make sure you can enter (not by land) then fly down to BKK, then up to Vientiane and do whatever quarantine requirements they may have.. For coming back, at least for now, Laos is on the Thai government list to come in with the one day PCR test so you'd fly back from Vientiane to BKK do the one night in the hotel waiting for your PCR test and if negative return to Udon. I'd say also that things are in flux so new rules on a land crossing might pop up any week now.

Can you not use an agent then to save your 80 year old body the stress of an hour flight to BKK? Good luck

Not 'normally' an option for the renewal of Australian Passports overseas. According to their site "Must be done in Person".

But in saying that a phone call to the Consular Section would do no harm.

Just looked online for the US Embassy in Thailand. You can now renew your passport via mail to the US Embassy and they are now accepting payment for the renewal online. The renewal form is DS 82, just filled mine out today to renew mine.

Just to clarify you cannot renew online, only submit payment online. The DS 82 must be sent via mail to the US Embassy in Thailand.

Negative on the return envelope. The return is done with a bank draft of 100 baht according to the website.
