Udon Thani to Chantaburi by road

Post by Zidane » May 30, 2020, 1:00 pm

I know its not possible now but maybe by July things will have opened up.
I,d be interested what would be considered the best route by those that have driven it.
I was thinking Udon -Khon Kaen then towards Korat. Then 204-304-33-317 to Chantaburi.
It's about 650km so probably an overnight stop.
Where?... Somewhere like Sa Kaeo maybe?
Any advice much appreciated. Thanks.

With an early morning start, you could be in 'Little Switzerland' valley just north of the Korat-Prachinburi border by early afternoon and find a nice, peaceful and picturesque place to stay.

I went via the 348 last year which is the slower road on the right on Tamada's maps. It's a nice drive after you pass Buriram and, generally quiet.

Maybe too near your final destination but the Chatrium resort at Soi Dao is nice (as is the golf course!)

used that route 5 or 6 times (to K Chang) ...... as 747 says always left early morning and never once had to rush to get the ferry

Some nice little resorts at Chaolao Beach zid (not quite up to your usual 6* luxury but comfortable)

Thanks for the replies guys.
Tams route is the one we are planning to do.
Maybe 450kms on day 1.Set off about 5.30am and get to a hotel just after lunch for some relaxation.
Do the other 200kms day 2 morning after breakfast.
samster, the Chatrium Resort looks nice but only about 100km from Chantaburi.
statto, are you telling me there are no 6* hotels at Chao Lao beach because that's where we will be heading ! :D
There's 2 or 3 resorts that look pretty decent there.
Shame the rainy season seems to have arrived...

Thanks for that Tam.It looks very nice and reasonably priced initially for a couple.
But when I add the 5 year old in the price shoots up to 16,000 baht for 4 nights !
Chao Lao there's a couple of decent ones... Sand Dunes and Baan Imm Sook resort for about 8,000 baht for 4 nights which is nearer our price range.
Maybe Khun statto knows those two ;)

They consider a 5 year-old a third adult? Last time we stayed we had 2 adults, 2 kids and an infant. We booked their Blue Mountain 2-bedroom villa that can be either for two separate couples but has the internal door for family bookings so we had 3 in one room and 2 in the other and the large patio all to ourselves. Was your price quote direct via their website or through agoda, etc..?

This was on Booking. com
The hotels website doesn't seem to be accepting reservations.

Just remembered, I stayed at the Kantary resort in Kabinburi last year. That's a nice hotel with good sized rooms and a pool. Only slightly out of the way and breaks the trip up.

zid my trip advisor report from 2016

"One of the better beaches along this coastline. Sand kept rubbish free, shallow water allowing kids to wander out a long way and still be within their depth. plenty of beachside resorts/restaurants so you can sit in the shade eat drink and relax while the kids swim and make sandcastles. Regular supply of motorbike vendors riding up/down the beach (about 1 every 10 mins) selling ice cream. Would recommend to anyone wanting a quiet beach break, although by Thurs afternoon there had already been an influx of early weekend revellers (although if 100 times as many turned up it would still be "deserted")

First time we stayed at New Travel Beach which is at the far end of the beach (cost was just under B1000 a night 2xadult +1 x 7yr old in 2016) Hotel was clean & comfy large rooms and best breakfast i've ever had at a Thai hotel. Downside was their "private beach" was filthy and unusable meaning you had to jump in the car and drive about 2km to one of the resturants further down the beach (most of whom kept their beach area spotless).

Cant remember where we stayed 2nd time as we just drove down and stopped at a bungalow resort (about B750) stayed for two nights before heading over to Koh Chang

Remember there being a some vids on You Tube inc hotels. Both yours seem to be in good area

Cheers for that statts, looks a decent beach area.

samster,by coincidence we were looking at Kabinburi as a stop off en route.
The Kantary was one of two hotels we were considering. The other one being the Serenity Hotel Onsen and Spa which is 7km from Kabinburi but not out of our way.
Rooms are 1,690 per night which includes breakfast. Hotel also has a pool and restaurant.

On Agoda, it was around 3k/night for the villa. Maybe better to call them first to check if they actually are open?

I looked at the Serenity when I chose Kantary. Cant remember what swung it but Kantary exceeded my expectations - might be because I watched 1st leg of last years play off final there when Leeds beat Derby!
