You can go by train but via Nakhon Ratchasima which is 5 hours then about 3 hours 30min to Surin you would need to catch the 05.50 train or the 06.54 there is a connection at 12.24 arrive Surin 15.12 you must bear in mind that they usually run late. Failing that take a bus To Khon Kaen 2 hours then a bus to Surin 5 hours.

Thanks for the info Chip

I think Bus would be the best option as getting the wife out of her bed and onto a train at that time will be a struggle :)

Basically my pal who is coming over for a trip is going to join that elephant project in Surin for a week, so he joins the group on a monday and me and the wife are heading to Bangkok to do visa stuff, so we will probably head for Surin on the Saturday and have a couple of nights there first.

Cheers

You will be travelling during the busiest, hottest and most dangerously (roads)time of the year in Thailand.Also.If going by train, you better buy your tickets now as a large segment of the population is on the move to their home villages for the Thai New Year rituals and celebrations with family!!

April 6 is a pretty early start to Songkran, Stan - a full week before the official celebrations.

VIP bus sounds the best plan, i think ill book it on the 3rd April when i arrive as we will be traveling back to Udon from Bangkok Via Surin to pick up my mate on the 13th or 14th of April if all is well with the Visa submission , so that will be chaos as Stan says

Will i be able to book all the tickets in Udon ?

Thanks
