Makro

Post by gprit » November 2, 2017, 1:12 pm

Made first visit to Makro...spent about an hour an a half ...two trolleys.....came to pay.....unbelievable they don't accept debit/credit cards. Only Thai cards and cash(!)

Had to abandon shop and they had to put everything back on shelf.
Cannot believe such a large place doesn't accept/visa/mastercard.

Gprit, there are 4 or 5 ATMs on the left as you walk past the front doors. Should have left your items in the trolleys and ducked to the ATMs, seen many do it, many times when they dont have enough cash.

Bad luck for your first experience.

Strangely though if your buying electrical items you can pay by cc at a small counter in the electronics section.

Makes you wonder why they don't do the same in the rest of the store...cc charges maybe?

Or maybe the banks dont want to support it as their exposure to Frequent Shopper programmes would be huge perhaps ?

Or maybe the consumers dont want it, as cash talks and CC 's have a money trail for the tax man.

I believe that Makro in U.K. are classed as a "Cash and Carry" Store. Seems to be the same here. I think initially they were established for Retailers to buy at Wholesale prices. Hence the requirement for MAKRO Membership Cards. I'm sure JON B. would know the history of the Dutch owned? Conglomerate.

Only use Makro for eggs and orange juice, rest is same price in Tesco/big c and get bags and take all cards.

Respectfully suggest you actually look at the price labels before making such a daft statement [-X

Even if they were the same price in Tesco/Big C/Makro (which they most certainly are not!) loads of basic stuff (eg Frozen veg ) Tesco do not sell anymore.

Thank god for makro because Tesco is absolutely crap with nowhere near the choice of what farangs need.in fact the farang restaurant owners would confirm this.without makro I would be on som tum for the rest of my life.big c not too bad either,in fact life savers.

Not been shopping in makro since july , but can't have changed that much.
coke, Fanta , sprite , plain flour ,strong flour, shortening, corn flour , sweet peppers , Leeks, celery, mushrooms , kidney beans , pepper , curry powder, fried charlottes, garlic, pork ,chicken, yogurt ,milk, cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, butter, sunflower oil, apples, frozen strawberries, blackberries , blue berries, peas, chips. tinned tomatoes ,tomato paste, beans. all cheaper in july , has something changed since then ?
always worth trying Tesco as things like soy sauce and sugar sometimes 1 baht cheaper , and sometimes buy milk as a long way to makro for a pint. maybe more things cheaper , i'm sure people buy other essentials. when I need large quantities of veg go to the morning market, but that's next door to makro anyway. don't know about fish ect

Beer Lao certainly cheaper than Tops by about 5 baht per bottle...

Champignon or button mushrooms much cheaper than Tops or Tesco Lotus.

Fresh Salmon about 30 % cheaper than Tesco Lotus or Tops.

Fresh scallops are 182/kg or approx 4 baht each.

Frozen scallops in Tesco are over 300 Baht for a pkt of 12.

well what i have learned after 16 years of stay , 7/eleven, tops, villa market ,foodland most expensive shops in thailand ,
and my times of missing falang food are longtime over...
so driving to a particular shop for a special need isn't there anymore...
bigc , lotus are about 20% more expensive , ngeesun is somewhere in the middle of these...only exceptions are promotions , (in any of them) , we always go makro and indeed the thalaad montong next to ,if the items do not look fresh ,what can happen in any shop , i simply do not buy them...
so we have makro as main number 1 , (opens at 6am) and sometimes bigc , as they are very near our home ,
lotus other side we never visit as i would not know any reason driving more far and pay more ?,
all this will be different according to your special preferences and needs ..enjoy your shopping ;)
