Are you talking about field hockey which is a world sport or ice hockey mainly played in northern hemisphere and not really a world sport.

I think he was talking about ice hockey played all over the world as opposed to "jolly hockey stix" the girls school sport now played by men and women popular in places like India ,Pakistan and Argentina

I think doodoo should have told Ali that boxing was not a sport. What about tossing the caber, football in all its forms apart from the sissy boys in girls tights that pad up for gridiron, Tennis, the lists go on.

Even Thailand, Hong Kong and Australia have male and female teams. You've got to get with it and catch up with the world.

LYM. Outside if North America, where does ice hockey have a 100% professional competition? Answer....none, only USA and Canada have professional leagues. It is not a world game, and Canadians are really just Americans anyhow.

There are some semi professional leagues elsewhere, but as I understand it, players are part timers only

Stat.

https://hockeyquestion.com/highest-payi ... y-leagues/

Looks like Russia, Sweden and Switzerland are highest payers outside of USA. Given average payments apart from Russia are quite low, many players must be working two jobs to earn a living.

I was not entirely correct in saying only North American ice hockey is 100% professional. However i am not far from the mark when I say, ice hockey is not really a world game with very few countries having a 100% professional competition, even if we add Russia, Sweden and Switzerland to the mix, that only totals 5 countries where it is a professional sport.

I must have missed the part where you mentioned you were talking about professional hockey. Sorry about that.

Whilst on the subject of professional leagues, how many countries run 100% pro field hockey leagues?

16 mens and 9 womens. It swells a bit over the years peaking on summer Olympics. Major nations Australia India, Pakistan, South Africa, Netherlands, Germany, USA, Canada, Spain. It certainly is a minor sport compared to football, basketball, tennis but there is no doubt it is more widely played than Ice Hockey. However, ice Hockey is huge in the few countries where it is a popular sport

That does not make it a world sport, which is why I made my initial post.
