MLB 2021 All-Stars Game Ratings Up

Post by jackspratt » July 17, 2021, 11:17 am

Apparently ratings for the All-Star game were up this year, despite the controversial move from Atlanta to Denver.
In the latest TV ratings, Fox’s coverage of the MLB All-Star Game averaged 8.31 million total viewers (per Nielsen finals), up one percent from the audience for the 2019 contest (7.1 mil), which had netted an all-time low of 8.1 million.

Please keep up at the back, giggles - this is about the 2021 game just held.

But interesting graph - perhaps a bright bloke like yourself can explain what "woke" stuff and politics was going on in, let's say, the 1980s.

You quoted it yourself, spratt, "up one percent from the audience for the 2019 contest (7.1 mil), which had netted an all-time low of 8.1 million."

It's been a dumpster fire since the woke crowd started putting their imaginary victimhood on display. RIP US sports. You should have stayed out of politics.

Never again.

I'm sure I read somewhere the 2nd worst TV audience in 2021 was directly linked to the change of venue. But without any perspective, and unsurprisingly given the source, misleading.

But it was still up on 2019 - is this a change in the trend do you think?

You didn't answer my question about the 80s - or you can choose the 90s if you like.

Or perhaps look at the similar trends in the NFL and the NBA. Maybe people are just turning off watching televised sport in the US, and it has very little to do with politics.

After all, there is a lot more to keep them entertained these days - Juvenal would support that.

Most of the bread and circus events have been put on hold, or have restrictions on attendance owing to covid. The best all-star baseball games took place in the 1950s.

Jack, we can rejoice. MLB is going to drop 'the stupid runner on second to begin extra innings for no known reason in the Universe rule' next season.

Very sad news, Uncle - on principle, I will be switching off my stream(s) after the bottom of the 12th.

ps I see your mob are heading back to Rodgers soon.

The Jays are both an interesting and frustrating team this year. There will be 15,000 fans allowed into the Skydome to watch them.

I watched Milwaukee defeat Cincinnati last night 7-4 in extra innings. It was a bit exciting to see the runner on second to start the tenth inning. But, the game went into the 11 or 12th inning and I was getting sleepy at 12:30 a.m. Happily, the Brewers scored a bunch of runs to win it 7-4. I would not have lasted if it went 15 or 16 innings. Anyway, the sooner they get rid of that stupid rule, the more enjoyable the game will be. Does that make any sense?

Nope, Toronto. I think it has a new name, but to the people who grew up here, it will always be the Skydome.

Nope - did you write this after the game, and just before you went to bed? :-k

BTW - were you one of the increased number of viewers who watched the All-star game?

Listening to the NESN broadcasters (Dave O'Brien, who I can barely tolerate, and the Eck, who I love) a couple of days ago, they were both strongly in favour of the man on 2nd rule, and the 7 innings double headers. (Great game result by the way).

Smart blokes.

Just to add balance, I also enjoy Buck Martinez and the guy he normally pairs with. Not so much the guy doing the current series v Red Sox. Martinez + Eckersley would be my dream team, although of course you don't how they would gel.

Martinez is a former catcher for Milwaukee and Toronto. He often partners with Pat Tabler (former player for the Cleveland Indians). The best baseball analyst these days, I think, is Kevin Barker. He is on The Fan (Toronto radio) with Jeff Blair on their 2-3 p.m. baseball show. They are very intelligent and have a good sense of humour.

7-inning double headers are for minor league baseball. Baseball is going back to 9-inning double headers next season. In the old days, '50s through '70s or so, double headers meant the games were played one game after another with about a 30-minute break between games. To maximise profits, owners nowadays empty the stadium after the first game, and one has to buy a new ticket for the second game, which begins 2-3 hours after the first game. It is the same as movies. There used to be a twin bill. Now you can just see one movie

Anyway, here's a short sample of Jeff and Bark discussing the Jays loss to Boston

I'm watching the ladies baseball from Tokyo atm. Any reason why they bowl underarm? Is it physiological, the way the rules are or just because they aren't very good? Lady cricketers dont seem to have a problem.

I've not watched any of it but your description sounds like ladies "softball". It's against the rules to pitch overhand.

I think you're right Shado. Just googled and, it seems the women play softball and the men baseball in Tokyo. Eurosport wrongly schedule it as "baseball" hence the confusion!

Doesnt seem a lot of difference to an occasional watcher like me (7 innings and underarm bowling seem to be the main 2). The Aussie Sheilas just beat the Italians in a game of few hits.

Cricket is much more entertaining!

The pitcher is much closer to the batter in softball than baseball making it more difficult to get a hit. I remember when I played, the best you could do was put your bat out and hope the ball hit it, and you could get to first base before the ball did. Then you could try to steal second, third and maybe home. Most softball games are very low scoring.
