UEFA Champions League 2020/21 knockout stages

Post by Zidane » March 11, 2021, 10:54 am

Couldn't find a topic for this....
Last night Liverpool 2 RB Leipzig 0 to complete a comfortable 4-0 aggregate win for the Merseysiders.
Also through PSG, Borrusia Dortmund and Porto.
Next week I expect Manchester City, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid to progress.
So, quite possibly, we could have 3 English teams in the last 8.
Could an English team win it this season ?
Obviously the big danger is Bayern Munich but I don't think any of the others are particularly superior to our teams, even PSG.
Juventus and Barcelona are already out, knocked out by Porto and PSG respectively.

Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

More a testament to how bad the Bundesliga is.
The team currently sitting second (equiv of first as everyone knows Bayern will win before a ball is kicked) has just lost to Liverpool (TWICE).
Shouldn't really be a surprise as in the last couple of years their "star" players have flopped miserably when transfered to Prem teams ........ Werner, Haverz, Pulisic, Joelinton, Haller etc etc ....... (Jadon Sancho suiters beware !!)

Manchester City 2 Borussia Moenchangladbach 0
(aggregate 4-0)
Chelsea 2 Atletico Madrid 0 (aggregate 3-0)
The two English sides joined in the quarter finals with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich this week.
Quarter final draw tomorrow... 3 English teams in the last 8.

Quarter Finals first leg....
Manchester City 2 Borussia Dortmund 1
Real Madrid 3 Liverpool 1

City will be disappointed not to have a two goal lead or more to take into the second leg.
Liverpool, well beaten last night but just about still in the tie. They will need a top class performance in the second leg to stand a chance of progressing.

The City/Dortmund game last night was a great watch. Looking forward to the 2nd leg already. I just hope Southgate has the balls to give Foden the freedom to drift around the pitch in the way he did last night when the Euros start .

Last night....
Porto 0 Chelsea 2
Bayern Munich 2 PSG 3

Great result for Chelsea, bouncing back from their awful performance against West Brom.
A bit of a shock in Germany but you can't rule Bayern out even though the second leg is away.

Poch must be an exceedingly happy man right now while Levy may be pondering what could have been.

...on second thoughts, probably not on that last bit.

"Hansi Flick’s Bayern produced the familiar high-pressing red waves, racking up 31 shots at goal over a thrilling, slightly wild 90 minutes. ...Bayern created a constant stream of chances on which the injured Robert Lewandowski would surely have gorged himself."

https://www.theguardian.com/football/20 ... tch-report

Oh dear...

"Robert Lewandowski has made it clear that he will not be fit in time for Bayern München's Champions League quarter-final return leg against Paris Saint-Germain."

Two second leg quarter finals last night....
Chelsea 0 Porto 1...Chelsea win on aggregate 2-1

PSG 0 Bayern Munich 1 (aggregate 3-3,PSG go through on away goals)

So both home teams scraped through in the end despite losing on the night.

Tonight can both Manchester City and Liverpool join Chelsea in the semi finals.
City should just about manage it but Liverpool will need a special performance to go through.

Liverpool 0 Real Madrid 0 (aggregate 1-3)
Borussia Dortmund 1 Manchester City 2 (aggregate 2-4).

Too much for Liverpool to do, in the end, and they can now concentrate on qualifying for next seasons competition.
City had to come from behind but were comfortable winners eventually.

Semi Final draw....
PSG v Man City, Chelsea v Real Madrid.

Europa League tonight with both Arsenal and Manchester United hoping to qualify for the semi finals after tonight's games.

Slavia Prague 0 Arsenal 4 (aggregate 1-5)
Manchester United 2 Granada 0 (aggregate 4-0)

So we have two English teams in the Europa League semi finals also...
An excellent result for Arsenal which keeps their season alive.
United got the job done as expected.

Semi Final draw...
Arsenal v Villarreal, Roma v Manchester United.

Champions League semi final first leg...
Real Madrid 1 Chelsea 1
Great result for Chelsea who must be slight favourites to progress to the final imo.

The second semi final first leg last night....
PSG 1 Manchester City 2
A fabulous result for City who came from behind to win the match.
An all English final maybe???

I honestly can't imagine anything more awful.

Unless it's a Rangers v Celtic final anything maybe.

Last night the Europa League semi finals first legs

Manchester United 6 Roma 2
Villarreal 2 Arsenal 1

A fabulous result for United who were 2-1 down at half time.
Apparently Arsenal were poor but Pepe's second half goal has given them a lifeline. 1-0 at The Emirates would be enough to send them through.

Zids predictions...
Champions League Final : Chelsea v Manchester City.
Europa League Final : Manchester United v Arsenal.

Scunthorpe won't be relegated.
Peterhead won't be relegated.

But maybe not everyone would agree.....

UEFA Champions League semi final second leg
Manchester City 2 PSG 0 (aggregate 4-1)

Two Riyad Mahrez goals fired City into the Champions League Final on a snowy May night in Manchester.
Di Maria was sent off for PSG in the 70th minute but they were already two goals down on the night.
