Perth in WA was to host the 5th Ashes test for this season. The WA Premier, Colonel Klink McGowan has kept his border closed unless you wish to do the 14 day quarantine, not good for interstate or international sports with tight schedules. So the cricket fans of WA miss out and the test will be played in Hobart Tasmania.
Been 9 covid deaths in WA since the start of the pandemic. 146,135 in the UK. McGowan has prioritised life over death and an open economy over a closed economy. Don't think many decent sandgropers will be losing much sleep over 5 days of test cricket given the way the government has managed the pandemic.
Managed... ROFLMAO.

Meanwhile, back at the Gabba, the Aussies started tossing marshmallows. Must be the (unaccustomed) heat?

Rod Marsh was a lot of things, pissed, obnoxious, but I've never heard anyone call him "mallow" :-k

Talking about marshmallows is there anything softer than Joe Root when he gets within site of a century? He's a choker in the Greg Norman class on the bouncy wickets.

Cameron Green got Root out. You're proving the point that jocks know as much about cricket as GT does about soccer. But keep trying. It's mildly entertaining if not in any way informative.
And to be fair to Root - Stokes and Butler also doing their best Greg Norman impressions under pressure this morning.

You're right, it was Green.

But it's Buttler. BuTTler.

Got that Mr Knowitall?

Well first blood to the Aussies, congratulations you got the gold medal. At least England beat the others and received silver. As I said on the first day, Joe won the toss and batted and left out Broad and Ando, why those decisions. In the post match review Sir Ian Bottoms gave a scathing attack on England and that decision making. The second match will be a lot different.

A BBC radio sports reporter mentioned this yesterday. Too bloody funny. Thanks for posting it up.

While the poms had a shocker and making it easy to kick em while they are on their knees, let’s not forget the fact the Aussies out played them in all facets.
It would be easy to describe the poms selections as abysmal, we should not go down that beaten track but should focus on the Aussie selections with each old or new addition playing their part to a tee.
Let’s not talk about the poms batting line up, at best a house of cards but let’s focus on the great efforts of the Aussie batsmen. Big scores with the whole team in sinc.
Bowling, well let’s not additionally focus on the poms lack of firepower but examine the Aussie bowling group fantastic joint efforts, 400 for our spinner is a great milestone. Will be some time before Leach reaches that number.
Injuries are about the only stat we could compare.
I’m sure the poms will improve next game.

I predict Leach can reach 400 in about 3 or 4 days 8-[

BROADly agree there, they've got the (big) edge. But another significant factor must be that it was at the Gabba. WRT the tourists, that venue must be the single most intimidating aspect of an Ashes thrash on the big island, no? Moreso as the opener. If you have any team that hasn't found it's feet yet due to lack of team time or tours or games or "Barmy Army" (or whatever excuse the press makes up), there's less than zero chance of finding them in Brisbane.

What's England's success rate at Adelaide BTW?

11 months ago at the Gabba:

Australia vs India, 4th Test
India tour of Australia

AUS 369 & 294
INDIA 336 & 329/7
India won by 3 wickets

Very occasionally we get a touring team with a bit of ticker. Note that this was the fourth, not first, test of the series. Makes a big difference when the tourists are acclimatised (and have a bit of ticker). Both Kohli and Ashwin didn't play in this test.

Dont agree with the assessment that Oz batted well. Marnus was the only one that looked comfortable unless you count Heads innings against a weakened English attack.

I expect Anderson and Broad to skittle the Aussies with the pink ball.

Unfortunately, I also expect Hazelwood and Cummins to do the same to England

I guess back then @Qldpolice were rather reticent on claiming imposters were afoot?

Absolutely. The Indians, minus Kohli and Ashwin, were magnificent. Let's hope the poms can lift their game and give us that level of contest and entertainment.

There were actually a few good players in this game to emerge from both sides.
But the poms just weren’t good enough.

Cummins sidelined as a Covid close contact on the eve of the second test. Unterskipper Smith to lead while Neser will make his test debut replacing the Captain.
