Rugby World Cup: the Scottish wheels come off... again.

Post by tamada » October 12, 2019, 10:44 pm

I guess the biggest typhoon to hit anywhere in the world this season is a pretty sound reason to postpone rugby games in Japan but to cancel them completely and award both teams 2-points as a technical draw? Of the two games already canceled, only one has no impact as England and France had already qualified. But Italy have been denied an admittedly very slim chance to qualify when their game against the All Blacks was culled.

However, the group that has the hosts, Ireland, Samoa, Russia and Scotland still has the second berth undecided... unless it is canceled. Then the hosts, that have already, quite inexplicably had the easiest game schedule of ANY of the competing teams will move forward while the Scots, who were cheated out of a semi-final berth in the last RWC at Twickenham by an incorrect, last-minute penalty call (French referee), will go home early.

OK, so the Scots lost their opener with a no-show against Ireland but have racked up two subsequent walkovers for a cumulative 95-0 scoreline only to be denied by the competition's organizers totally inadequate contingency planning. Their 'force majeure' plan was to move any affected games a whole 14 miles to a different stadium. Did any of these useless buggers look at a map of Japan? Did any of them do a wiki on Japan typhoon season?

Their excuses about 'an exceptionally late and strong hurricane' is laughable when you consider there's been race on the F1 calendar in Japan, in October pretty much every year since 1963. The Japanese aren't surprised by typhoons and the F1 organizers manage to skate around any seasonal, inclement weather by, get this, rescheduling things. Despite there being a F1 race at Suzuka in Japan this weekend as well as the same typhoon, they have easily cancelled ALL planned Saturday qualifying and simply moved it to early Sunday, race day, with the actual race happening on time in the afternoon. They did that 3 years ago as well and the viewing millions and the sponsors still got their money's worth. But Rugby World apparently didn't plan for this typhoon or any other contingency at all. This is evidenced by their rules clearly stating that in the event a game cannot be commenced (note: no specific reason given), then the game will not be postponed but canceled and the points divied up as above.

OK, so all 20 competing teams signed up for this, thus accepting these rules but I can assume that Rugby World were just paying lip service to the participation of the emerging nations and probably thought that all the groups would be cut and dried with the usual 'premier' teams advancing. Except for the valiant but unexceptional Brave Blossoms of the host nation who they are hell bent on making sure get into the quarters. This with the aid of the aforementioned easy rest schedule and an appalling penalty call on a crooked scrum in their game against Samoa that gave them the extra point they desperately needed to come close to qualifying. Scotland already easily got their extra points when they steamrollered Samoa and Russia.

Some questions will need to be asked about this scramble to pitch world class events in areas either not quite geared up for them or timed with complete disregard to the local weather. The footie World Cup in Qatar was the start of all this nonsense. With the next Rugby World Cup being held in France, it should be a bit less stage-managed. Unless the Jockinese get that damned frog ref again!

Japan v Scotland at Yokohama to go ahead as scheduled...
USA v Tonga and Wales v Uruguay also get green light, but Namibia v Canada in Kamaishi is cancelled after Typhoon Hagibis.

Now it's up to the Bravehearts to crush the Brave Blossoms.

Tam, It wasn't a Frog ref but a Boer called Craig Joubert (I guess it sounds French!)

Good luck against the combined Japanese team

I would rather the Japs win. That would be the more fun result.

**** fun, its got farkall to do with it.

The BEST team will win, whether it be the heavily assisted Japs or the horribly collapsible Jocks.

He ran like a Frenchie though. Beat both teams down the tunnel.

Good game to watch apart from the score. The Japanese were worth their win though there were some strange looking Japanese players. I suppose if you book a hotel room for more than one night you are a national except Thailand.

LOL.

I note the Aussie team that recently retained the Ashes also had a South African called Labuschagne as well. Plays for Glamorgan... go figure.

Cracking game though despite the Scots not showing up in the first half (again). That burst in the 2nd half when the Scots got two back-to-back tries and then the Japanese rising to stifle that threat when historically, they've been weak finishers.
Defo the best team won.

The ringers in the Jap team come from Samoa, most get their international debut first from japans national team, good money for the Samoans, as they have quality Rugby players, only way to get a good team in Japan is to import them, and help the locals learn from a long line of Football player country, Cheaper then the more advance players from NZ OZ UK, Wales ETC, have a nice game boys
Quality is best done first

really need to do a bit of research before saying japan has ringers , scottish foreign players in the last 6 nations . not sure how many in this world cup
The country with the most foreign-born players in the 2019 Six Nations is Scotland again. Their overall number is down, thanks mainly to injuries which have ruled John Barclay, Hamish Watson, David Denton, etc from their latest squad.

Simon Berghan – New Zealand
Allan Dell – South Africa

I read Rugby World Cup organisers have issued misconduct charges against the Scottish Rugby Union over comments made about the potential cancellation of its last group-stage match against Japan. :D

Here's some interesting, non-rugby reading (for some anyway).

Thomas Blake Glover: the Scottish samurai.

A Broch loon that played for Japan.
