County Championship decider

Post by stattointhailand » September 5, 2017, 5:29 pm

Great to see that a week after the "Summer Bank Holiday" it's Raining at Old Trafford (nothing new there then).

Just to prove the UK is having a truly "British Summer", the games at Surrey, Warwickshire & Yorkshire in Div 1 and at Derbyshire, Durham, Leicestershire, Northants and Notts are also delayed due to rain

4 days rain should be enough to see Essex clinch the Championship for the first time in 25 years (not bad for a team that were only promoted this year) ............ PLEASE TAKE NOTE ALL AT NUFC ](*,)

Essex now 141 - 4 so follow on target reached along with an almost certain draw in this match ........ less than 2 sessions and Lancs now have to bat again. So with 3 matches left the lead is still over 30 pts \:D/ \:D/ \:D/

Essex declare shortly after getting first batting bonus at 202 - 8 and they shake hands on a draw.

Cant understand why they didnt dec when they avoided the follow on at 141 - 4. and leave Lancs 0 bowling bonus points.
That would have given Lancs a real headache ........

1) Forfeit 2nd innings and hope to bowl Essex out for less than 150 in 45 overs or
2) Throw the bat for 5 overs for about 50 - 5 and set a target of 200 in 40 overs and hope Essex take on the challenge.

The chances of Lancs winning their last three games are remote (unless an Indian Summer settles over blighty) so I really think Lancs had to win todays match if they were to stop Essex winning their first title for 25 years.

Essex beat Warks by an innings .... Lancs still need 12 (with 5 wkts & 1 day and a bit left) to make Somerset bat again having had to follow on ...... Hants chances are now over with Essex winning ............ GET that Champers on the chiller at Chelmsford. If Lancs draw they will be 48 behind with 48 to play for so Essex will be Champions on Matches won with 2 games to spare

Yes,well done to Essex \:D/ 25 years ago Worcestershire were the county champions and Pakistan won the deciding Test and the series against England 2-1.Pakistan won the final Test of the five game series by 10 wickets, needing just one ball to secure the 5 runs needed for victory.
Do you remember some of Englands "stars" of that era ? Gooch,Stewart,Atherton,Gower,Robin Smith and Phil Tufnell.
Last year,on the final match of the county championship season, three teams had a chance of lifting the title....Middlesex(winners),Yorkshire and Somerset.
This season,in a strange quirk of fate with two matches to go,the same 3 teams are locked together hoping to avoid relegation with Warwickshire.
Yorkshire have 124 points and both Somerset and Middlesex 123 (Middlesex 2 points deducted) and Middlesex play Somerset on the final game of the season....."County Championship relegation decider" eh,statts !
Neither Surrey on 136 points nor Hampshire on 135 points are entirely safe but it would mean an unlikely sequence of results for one of them to go down.
Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

Will the two point deduction given to Middx be the deciding factor in the relegation scrap?

Suppose some might call it "taking the p*ss" .......

Get bowled out for 76 (media jumps on the "champions hangover" reports) have to follow on 178 runs behind.
Make better fist of it second time round and set Hants 185 in 67 overs to win, which is half what Essex just scored so clearly getable.
Reduce Hants to 29 for 6 on their own track and finally bowl them out for 76 (20 partnership for last wicket) in 29.4 overs.

After wins for Middx and Yorks (change of underwear req'd several times before getting over the line) and Surrey 39 - 2 chasing 143 with 34 overs left to beat Somerset it may yet turn out to be a very bad day for Hants :-$

OUCH

Invincibles march on to 10th win, blowing Yorks away for 111 and then 74 (their lowest total since 1999)

Essex managed to win the league by so great a margin that they could have still won it without any of their 68 batting or bowling points (10 x 16pts for win + 4 x 5pts for draw = 180 pts)

Middlesex relegated due to a costly points deduction and they were also last seasons County Championship winners !
