European Football team competitions 2016/17

Post by BobHelm » June 20, 2016, 6:42 pm

Yeap, the last ones are only just finished but for those entering the very first stages of the competitions the interest starts here.

Here is the Champion's League schedule.
28–29/06/16: First qualifying round, first leg
05–06/07/16: First qualifying round, second leg
12–13/07/16: Second qualifying round, first leg
19–20/07/16: Second qualifying round, second leg
26–27/07/16: Third qualifying round, first leg

18–19/10/16: Group stage, matchday three
01–02/11/16: Group stage, matchday four
22–23/11/16: Group stage, matchday five
06–07/12/16: Group stage, matchday six
14–15/02/17 and 21–22/02/17: Round of 16, first leg
07–08/03/17 and 14–15/03/17: Round of 16, second leg
11–12/04/17: Quarter-finals, first leg
18–19/04/17: Quarter-finals, second leg
02–03/05/17: Semi-finals, first leg
09–10/05/17: Semi-finals, second leg
03/06/17: Final (National Stadium of Wales, Cardiff)
Nice that Cardiff get a final & that it is in early June. Depending on who looks like making that, it might be worth an earlier than usual trip home next year!!

The draw for the 1st. & second qualifying rounds took place a few minutes ago.

The 1st. round consists of just 8 teams & the British interest was The New Saints FC of Wales. This is how it worked out..
Flora Tallinn (Estonia) v Lincoln (Gibraltar)

The New Saints FC (Wales)
v Tre Penne (San Marino)

Valletta (Malta) v B36 Tórshavn (Faroe Islands)

Santa Coloma (Andorra) v Alashkert (Armenia)
You have to feel that anyone associated with the club will be pretty content with the draw, Although playing the first leg away is usually the best route to take.

This is the way Round 2 works...
There are 34 teams in the second round of the draw
The champions of the countries who enter in this round are joined by the first qualifying round winners. The appropriate number of balls contain slips of paper reading 'Winner first qualifying round tie x' and take the coefficient of the seeded team in each of those ties.
Before the draw clubs are split into groups with equal numbers of seeded and unseeded teams who are drawn together.
Socks will be delighted to know that Celtic enter at this stage & that they got a humdinger of a draw. :D
Flora Tallinn (Estonia) or Lincoln (Gibraltar) v Celtic
So, after that nail-biting excitement we progress to the Micky Mouse Cup, oops, I mean, of course, the Europa League.

The schedule..
20/06/16: First and second qualifying round draw, Nyon
30/06/16: First qualifying round, first leg
07/07/16: First qualifying round, second leg
14/07/16: Second qualifying round, first leg
15/07/16: Third qualifying round draw, Nyon
21/07/16: Second qualifying round, second leg
28/07/16: Third qualifying round, first leg
04/08/16: Third qualifying round, second leg
05/08/16: Play-off draw, Nyon
18/08/16: Play-off round, first leg
25/08/16: Play-off round, second leg
26/08/16: Group stage draw, Monaco
15/09/16: Group stage, matchday one
29/09/16: Group stage, matchday two
20/10/16: Group stage, matchday three
03/11/16: Group stage, matchday four
24/11/16: Group stage, matchday five
08/12/16: Group stage, matchday six
12/12/16: Round of 32 draw, Nyon
16/02/17: Round of 32, first leg
23/02/17: Round of 32, second leg
24/02/17: Round of 16 draw, Nyon
09/03/17: Round of 16, first leg
16/03/17: Round of 16, second leg
17/03/17: Quarter-final draw, Nyon
13/04/17: Quarter-finals, first leg
20/04/17: Quarter-finals, second leg
21/04/17: Semi-final draw, Nyon
04/05/17: Semi-finals, first leg
11/05/17: Semi-finals, second leg
24/05/17: Final (Friends Arena, Solna)
So a Swedish final..

1st. round qualifying draw (Britain & Ireland interests only)
Hearts will play FC Infonet away in Estonia.
Aberdeen draw Fola Esch of Luxembourg
Cork City to play Linfield in a cross-border tie
IK Fotboll v Bala Town (aka Bale Town...) :D

"Socks will be delighted to know that Celtic enter at this stage & that they got a humdinger of a draw.
Lincoln Red Imps (Gibraltar) v Celtic".

Brenda and his lot from the 'midden' surpassed themselves losing 1-0 in Gibraltar but the game at 'Pighead' will be another story.

Any outlets in Udon for Red Imps shirts? \:D/ =D>

socksy,I think you will be a very happy man today after Celtic suffered the most embarrassing defeat in their history !
But,wait, according to manager Brendan Rodgers there was "NO EMBARRASMENT" in this defeat !

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers insisted "there's no embarrassment" [-X after his side lost 1-0 to Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar in the Champions League second qualifying round.
Lee Casciaro's goal for the part-timers condemned Celtic to arguably their worst ever defeat in Rodgers' first competitive game in charge.
"I'm not really [shocked]. :-s I know these results can happen," said Rodgers.
"We stay calm. We need a performance next week."

◾'One Red Imps player was driving a taxi a few hours before the game' [-(
Celtic will welcome the champions of Gibraltar - a team containing a fireman, a policeman and a taxi driver - to Glasgow next Wednesday

Also last night in the UEFA Champions League 2nd qualifying round first leg.....

The New Saints (TNS) 0 Apoel Nicosia 0 .....a decent result for the Welsh against a side that reached the group stages of the Champions League a couple of years ago but they will be up against it in the second leg in Cyprus.
Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

I think there was a cry from outside in the stadium car park, after the game "Taxi for Rodgers". :-({|= (not)
Maybe Brenda he thought they had actually qualified for the "Chumpions League'

It just gets better. The Pope's first eleven losing to the minnow's (maybe that should be Imps) from Gibraltar the other night, and then last night the second eleven lead by the previous Guvnor at the 'midden' - the 'Ginger Rodent's' side lose 1-0 at Easter Road to Bronby.

Dundalk recover well from their away loss in the first leg & progress after easily beating Belarusian club BATE Borisov - who are usually a regular fixture in the final qualification stages. Indeed, Dundalk could become the first ever League of Ireland club to progress to the Champions League group stages, which would be quite an achievement..

Late penalty gets Celtic through - doesn't hold much promise of being better than their last few European forays though!!!

Good luck to Aberdeen & West Ham - they will both have to improve on their first leg efforts to progress though..

Aberdeen out after a troubled night of European football away from home. As the Beeb put it..
Aberdeen were left to rue a missed penalty, refereeing decisions and an own goal as they were knocked out of the Europa League by NK Maribor.
However, it was a pretty sad event for the home side with 2 of the home sides' young B team players dying in a car accident earlier in the week.

It was a sparkling performance at their new home for the Hammers though. Trailing by a goal from the first leg they evened the score after 8 minutes & were ahead by half time.
A massive 53,914 crowd were there to see it & the Hammers were rarely troubled by the visitors.
They will join 43 other clubs in Friday's play-off round draw, which includes 15 losers from the 2016-17 Champions League third qualifying round.

Citi in Romania early hours of Wednesday morning.
The fans will be disappointed if they don't manage to stay out of joining United in the Euro but this could be a very tricky first leg..
