EURO FOOTY COMPS 2015/16

Post by Zidane » December 12, 2015, 12:23 pm

England stand a real chance of getting out of the Group Stages this time....not only do the top 2 teams from each group qualify for the last 16 but also the best 4 third placed teams...quite difficult to get eliminated early,really =;
Scotland must have been bad not to qualify for this..... :D

How do you qualify from a group?
Good news - more teams progress from the group stages than go out. \:D/
As the tournament has expanded to 24 countries for the first time, there is now the need for a last-16 stage.
Finishing first or second in a group guarantees progress, but there will also be room for the four sides who finish third with the best points tallies.
That means only eight out of 24 teams will be eliminated at the group stage.

The group no team wants to be in
A major tournament would not be a major tournament without one.
As one team comes from each pot, it is possible world champions Germany could be joined by Italy, Poland and Wales, the highest-ranked side in Pot 4.

England
The only side with a 100% record in qualifying, England scored 31 goals, a tally only bettered by Poland's 33.
The reward is a spot in Pot 1 alongside defending champions Spain, Germany, Portugal and the world's top-ranked side, Belgium.
That means England cannot be drawn against any of those nations, or hosts France.
There is a 50% chance they will be drawn with Wales, Northern Ireland or Republic of Ireland.
Best-case draw: Switzerland, Slovakia, Albania.
Worst-case draw: Italy, Poland, Wales.

Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

England have not been handed a bad draw at all.
North Ireland will have to continue to confound the pundits if they are going to get through what looks like a very tough group indeed.
Equally, the Republic will have to produce some sterling stuff to progress from their group.
The hosts - who obviously didn't need to qualify - look to have been handed a Group that they will be very disappointed not to progress from.

France appear to have the easiest draw.....did Platini pull the names out of the hat or what ?
The same cant be said for the Republic of Ireland who certainly have it tough.
And England might yet be glad that 3 teams can potentially qualify from the group.

Surprisingly good result away for Chelsea, given how the two sides are doing in their respective leagues. They are certainly still in with a good chance of qualifying & all to play for in the return leg.
Zenit suffer a rare European defeat but just about everything was against them. This was their first game for 10 weeks & it showed. However they held Benfica until extra time, when they managed to concede & have a man sent off. Andre Villas-Boas' side will need a speedy return to form in order to turn this around.

Gent were 3 nil down with 10 minutes to go so will probably feel that they are still in with at least a faint chance.

Madrid well & truly in charge of their tie. Roma will need a minor miracle to turn this around. Cristiano Ronaldo defied his Spanish media critics by scoring an away goal. As it was his 33rd. goal of the season he maybe was entitled to exit the press conference.. :D

Well it looks like vG's plan of qualifying for Champions' League by winning the Europa might be in tatters before it even started.
He might like to read the BBC's view on the game, or probably not as it starts...
Manchester United produced another underwhelming display as they lost to Danish side FC Midtjylland in the first leg of their Europa League last-32 tie.
http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/35548870

The good news is that it probably means he will not see out the season.
The bad news is that means The not so Special One must lead the field as a replacement...

Elsewhere the other English sides all get away with away draws which leaves them with every chance of progressing.
In Spain, it was Gary Neville's 41st birthday. He has been having a torrid time since taking over at Valencia. Has only just managed to win his first game in the League & was destroyed by Barcelona in the Cup.
His side managed another record last night, but one he will be far happier about.
They became the first side to score 5 goals in the first half of a Europa game. They settled down after that though & only won the second 45 minutes by 1 goal. It makes for a happy trip to Austria for the second leg though..

You are being very harsh on Van Gaal,Bob......after all,United did win the possession battle 63% to 37% which is what counts in the "philosophy" !
Visiting fans were charged 71 quid to watch that rubbish.....youd get much better value in Walking Street,Pattaya !
FC Midttjylland hadnt played for 2 months because of the Danish winter break and before that just 1 win in 10 matches !
Have United reached there lowest point yet ? No,but that could well happen in the FA Cup in Shrewsbury on Monday night.
Incidentally, the word on the street is that Rooney is moving to China at the end of the season (to play football ;) ) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic,a free agent, will be coming to United on a 2 year deal along with Jose Mourinho.
Dont know if that rumour has reached the villages of Udon Thani Province yet ?

Having watched the highlights United should have taken more from the game despite the Danish side passing up a gilt edged chance from their own half with two up front and only the keeper to beat. He incidentally had a fine game between the sticks.

Maybe I'm being cynical, but I don't think Ibrahimovic will enjoy the success, like many foreign striker flops, in the EPL as he has done in Spain, Italy and France, oh and Sweden as well. If he goes there only time will tell. At least his pockets will be brimming.

Looks like The Gunners can concentrate a little more in their FA Cup replay against Hull as their European adventure looks over for the year. Lionel Messi has had a relatively quiet season by his standards but chipped in with 2 goals here to all but end Arsenal's European season yet again at the last 16 stage.
Still all to play for in the other match, which is a real surprise considering that Bayern were 2 nil up after an hour of the game. The Old Lady will be pleased with the second half performance but it will be that needed in the second leg, Bayern were all over the hosts in the first half & must be wondering how they managed to leave with only a draw..

Very satisfactory first leg result away from home for Citi. For once they had all their big guns on display & they didn't disappoint at all. Unless the wheels really come off in the second leg then Citi are through to the quarter finals.
All still to play for as the other game ends goal less. Atletico had the better of the game as the hosts had to play the last 20 minutes reduced to 10 men. However the visitors have had a real problem finding the back of the net of late & that run continued..
Sporting Braga of Portugal become the first side into the Europa last 16 as the draw is enough to put them through against their Swiss opponents after an away win in the first leg.

Wow what a night for English football. All 3 sides through to the next round. OK it is only the Mickie Mouse European Cup, but it is nice to have the success all the same.. :D
It was not exactly a classic Pool night in Europe. They were gifted a 5 minute lead through a penalty but then had 85 nervous minutes as they couldn't increase the score while a visitors' goal would have pushed them out.
It looked like another of those vanG United games at home (awful :D ) when the visitors went into an even bigger lead inside half an hour. However he will remain in the chair for a while longer thanks to an inspired display by youngster Marcus Rashford. He was only on because Anthony Martial injured himself in the warm up  but took the opportunity well with 2 goals.
No dramas at Spurs. They cantered away with the tie fairly comfortably. Of the 3 sides you have to say that they look very capable of going all the way in this competition - if Premier League ambitions do not get in the way. All that without talisman Harry Kane playing. They do look a good side!!

5-1....cant argue with that.De Gea and Smalling already ruled out and Martial injures his hamstring in the warm up !
What a debut from 18 year old Marcus Rashford and looks like he will be given a run in the team now.
There were 4 regulars from the under 21's in Uniteds team last night, plus 2 more and Rojo came on as subs.
These kids are making a difference because they play naturally and without fear, unlike some of the first team regulars.
This injury crisis is actually helping Van Gaal as he is being forced to play youngsters, who have no inhibitions, instead of the sterile, putrid stuff we have seen from the first team regulars for most of the season.

The Spuds do look good and must fancy their chances of going all the way as well as winning the Premiership.
Liverpool seem to blow hot and cold but maybe had an eye on the League Cup final on Sunday.

The draw for the Europa League last 16 takes place in Switzerland on Friday. Some good teams left in.You would certainly want to avoid Borussia Dortmund,Sevilla and Tottenham but no easy games on paper.

The last 16 line up

Athletic Bilbao (Spain) Anderlecht (Belgium)
Basel (Switzerland ) Bayer Leverkusen (Germany)
Borussia Dortmund (Germany) Braga (Portugal)
Fenerbahce (Turkey) Lazio (Italy)
Liverpool (England) Manchester United (England)
Sevilla (Spain) Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine)
Sparta Prague (Czech Republic) Tottenham (England)
Valencia (Spain) Villarreal (Spain

Tough one on paper for 'Spuds' and either 'Clippity' or LvG will be disappointed after the two games are completed as one will obviously exit.
