New Zealand 29 Australia 09 ABs retain Bledisloe Cup.

The effort from the Australian team was noticeably more impressive, too many infringements and occasional ill-discipline hurt the Wallabies as they looked to match the physicality of the All Black forwards. A dour first half where both teams just stood still and attempted to keep hold of the ball without making much momentum to the opposition try line, the All Blacks only led 15-9 at halftime courtesy of Dagg’s tries and a conversion and penalty to Barrett, while Foley and Hodge kicked penalties for the visitors.

A defensive mindset from the Wallabies, however, did result in main protagonist Adam Coleman being yellow carded for a dangerous charge on All Blacks full-back Ben Smith late in the first half. The All Blacks did not score again while Coleman was off the field as the Wallabies slowed the pace, with the game littered with squabbles and intermittent bad blood from both teams. Julian Savea then gave his side some breathing space just after Coleman returned when Barrett’s blistering pace again exploited space in the Wallabies defence before Same Cane grabbed his side’s fourth try about 15 minutes later.

Both sides now have a week off in the Rugby Championship before the All Blacks face Argentina in Hamilton on 10 September, while the Wallabies play South Africa in Brisbane.

Elsewhere Argentina beat South Africa 26 -24.

The Pumas appeared to be letting another 10-point lead slip through their fingers, like they did in the final 15 minutes to lose 30-23 in Nelspruit but this time they made home advantage count courtesy of the 78th-minute three-pointer by the replacement González Iglesias.

The win was only their second over the Springboks in 24 meetings and condemned Allister Coetzee to defeat in his first overseas Test as the South Africa coach.

Great start to the English Rugby season with a tasty opener between Gloucester 31-38 Leicester.

Rarely, if ever, has a Premiership season kicked off at such a cracking pace under the Friday night lights. If this is an indication of what is to come then everyone will be richly entertained, although Gloucester will not be thinking that way for several days. As their director of rugby David Humphreys made clear afterwards, no professional team holding a 31-7 lead at home should end up on the losing side.

Leicester appeared braced for a heavy defeat until Gloucester, having removed their tight forwards from the fray with the game seemingly won, fatally slackened their grip. The Tigers, for whom Lachlan McCaffrey was a tireless presence, tied things up with a 77th-minute try from Brendon O’Connor and then sealed victory in the final minute via a close-range driven maul finished off by Sam Harrison, his second try of a topsy-turvy night.

Literally, a game of 2 halves. Gloucester looked very sharp in the first half with slick passing and hitting angles and their pack providing quick ball from all phases of play. In the second half Gloucester's pace dropped off allowing Leicester back in to make a spectacular comeback. The Tigers sensed a weakness in the Gloucester pack and they punished the home team with driving mauls. Tuilagi clearly still very rusty after his long lay off did not look comfortable playing no.12. If Gloucester can play for 80 minutes instead of just 50 they would be a top 4 team. Leicester still looking very lateral, need a bit more guile in the backs. An altogether highly entertaining match to start to the season off.

Australia 23-17 South Africa

It wasn’t especially pretty, and some of the same old mistakes were there for all to see, but a win is a win for a Wallabies side low on confidence, and it was a marked improvement from their performances against the All Blacks. True, the Springboks are hardly in the same class as their trans-Tasman rivals, but then who is?

More importantly, it will give Michael Cheika’s side a much-needed confidence boost heading into the rest of the championship and something to build on for the greater challenges to come. Are they the finished product? Nowhere near, but at least this performance points in the right direction. It also eases the pressure on Cheika, who had looked an increasingly forlorn and outspoken figure with each passing defeat. When a couple of key calls at the start of the second half went against the Wallabies, you could almost hear the excuses in his post-match press conference.

But full credit to Cheika for sticking with the team and backing the same players to bounce back after that last-up loss to the All Blacks. Despite a few tense moments, it was the right call.

New Zealand 57-22 Argentina

In the other game the ABs beat the Pumas 57-22 in Hamilton but not a game that was as one sided as the scoreline suggests, with the Pumas trailing only 24-22 with about 30 minutes remaining. Coach Steve Hansen, however, then went to his bench earlier than expected and the home side scored five unanswered tries to earn their third successive bonus point victory after two comfortable wins over Australia. Unflattering as the scoreline might seem it was a real test match and the ABs had to work hard for the win.

Rugby Championship: New Zealand beat South Africa 41-13 and win title in convincing fashion whilst Australia beat Argentina 36 - 20 in Perth.

ABs Hooker Dane Coles gave a masterclass in backline playmaking to set up three New Zealand tries as the world champions thrashed South Africa 41-13. Coles made the final pass for tries to Israel Dagg, Julian Savea and Sam Whitelock, while Ben Smith, Ardie Savea and TJ Perenara also crossed to secure the bonus-point victory.

Beauden Barrett slotted four conversions and a penalty for the home side, who have moved to 20 competition points sealing the Rugby Championship with two games remaining. Springboks winger Bryan Habana scored his 66th test try, three short of the world record of Japan’s Daisuke Ohata, while flyhalf Elton Jantjies added a conversion and two penalties for the touring side.

The hosts only had a 15-10 lead at halftime as they struggled to get any flow and turned the ball over just when they appeared to have stretched the visitors to breaking point, but kicked away with four second-half tries. While Barrett kicked a ninth-minute penalty to score the first points for the All Blacks, the visitors got on board when Habana ran a superb angle and was put into space by Warren Whiteley 10 minutes later.

The All Blacks responded immediately when Jantjies dropped the restart and following an attacking scrum, Coles made a no-look pass to put Dagg over. The hooker again provided the final pass to give Julian Savea his 43rd test try – his first against South Africa – in the 28th minute.

Jantjies’ penalty ensured the All Blacks only held a five-point advantage at halftime, but they extended their lead in the 49th minute when Smith finished off a sweeping counter attack sparked by Barrett and Coles. Openside flanker Ardie Savea, making his first test start, grabbed his second try, before Whitelock received a 15-metre pass from Coles to score in the corner. Replacement scrumhalf Perenara capped the scoring from an attacking scrum.

In the other game the Wallabies will no doubt be pleased to have won tonight —and to have secured a bonus point. With so little possession they may wonder just how they managed it, but credit will be given where it’s due, to their defence which did a mountain of work.

After three quick tries to start the game — a time during which Argentina seemed in a distracted daze, as if they were worried they’d rushed off to the game having forgotten to turn the oven off— the Wallabies appeared on track for a big win but any slickness they showed early on soon lost its lustre as the game became more of a grind. The backs never really had much of a chance after that blistering opening.

For all that the Wallabies showed enough class and determination to win. Argentina, meantime, will be sorry they couldn’t make more of their time on the ball.

Australia squander chances in 18-10 loss to Springboks in Pretoria, with South Africa’s points coming via recalled five-eighth Morne Steyn, who kicked four penalties, two drop goals and expertly steered his team to victory. Australia will be upset at this loss after establishing a 10-3 lead after a Bernard Foley penalty and a debut Test try in the 14th minute to Scott Sio, who crossed under the posts to cap off an impressive multi-phase play peppered with smart offloads. But the Springboks fought back and turned the match into a grind after Israel Folau’s sin-binning six minutes from the break.

In the other game in Buenos Aires the ABs beat Argentina 17-36 New Zealand, it took 28 minutes to break down Argentina's defence then the ABs ran in five tries within 15 minutes either side of half-time to set up a 36-17 win over the Pumas.

Argentina 21-33 Australia at Twickenham in London

Argentina’s decision to give up home advantage resulted in the third highest crowd of the Rugby Championship season, but it cost them on the field as they secured the wooden spoon in an exciting but messy encounter.

South Africa 15-57 New Zealand in in Durban.

New Zealand claim largest victory over South Africa in nine-try blitz... New Zealand overcame the absence of the suspended half-back Aaroan Smith to seal a clean sweep in the Rugby Championship with a nine-try, 57-15 victory against South Africa.

England and NZ are currently the two form teams. Not the best time to peak though, four years out from a World Cup (for England I mean, NZ appear to be maintaining their high standards regardless of where the team is in the World Cup cycle).

For most other teams it's really a rebuilding phase. Not sure what to make of Australia as they seem to have flashes of brilliance combined with some really dour performances and SA really need to rethink deeply as relying on Steyn's boot just doesnt hack it any more and their 2nd half against the ABs saw the Boks 'knackerd' and puffing allowing the All Blacks to score at will!

European Champions Cup

In European Champions Cup action Toulon lost 23-31 as Saracens made European Cup history by fulfilling their vow of ending Toulon’s unbeaten home record in the tournament. Sarries, who won the cup for the first time in May when they defeated Racing 92 in Lyon, stunned the partisan home crowd at Stade Mayol by taking a 25-6 lead in the first-half after a display of almost total rugby. A thrilling match worth watching in replay for the stunning display by Saracens.

Connacht probably the least expensive side in the competition made a statement on their return to the Champions Cup, with a thrilling 23-21 Pool 2 win against Toulouse whose expensive all star team failed to dent Connachts endeavour. Craig Ronaldson’s coolly struck conversion of Bundee Aki’s 67th-minute try proved to be the decisive score, as Toulouse fell to a fifth successive away defeat in Europe for the first time in their history.

Elsewhere Leicester were thumped by Glasgow Warriors and Wasps crushed Zebre Rugby in a one sided affair, with Leinster, Northampton and Scarlets running out winners in their respective games. On the whole English, Scottish and Irish rugby have had a good weekend so far and with English and Irish sides in action today.

Results:

Glasgow Warriors 42 - 13 Leicester Tigers
Wasps 82 - 14 Zebre Rugby
Leinster Rugby 33 - 15 Castres Olympique
RC Toulon 23 - 31 Saracens
Northampton Saints 16 - 14 Montpellier
Connacht Rugby 23 - 21 Toulouse
Scarlets 28 - 11 Sale Sharks

Fixtures 16/10/2016
Bordeaux-Begles v Ulster Rugby
Racing 92 v Munster Rugby
Exeter Chiefs v ASM Clerm

French sides fared better in Sunday’s Champions Cup fixtures with Exeter blown away by first-half tries from Clermont's flanker Julien Bardy, wing Noa Nakaitaci and centre Wesley Fofana during a devastating 15-minute spell. Exeter had no answer as full-back Nick Abendanon claimed a bonus-point touchdown just three minutes into the second period, before Fofana added another try, while scrum-half Morgan Parra kicked four conversions and substitute Pato Fernandez one.

Exeter 8 - 35 Clermont Auvergne

The Bordeaux-Begles rolled over Ulster with three late tries that gave them a 28-13 victory. Ulster led 13-9 with six minutes remaining thanks to an early try from Andrew Trimble and eight points from the boot of Paddy Jackson. Bordeaux-Begles had offered three kicks from the tee - with Ireland international Ian Madigan slotting two penalties - before a flurry of tries sent Ulster packing without so much as a losing bonus point

Bordeaux-Begles 28 -13 Ulster

New Zealand 37-10 Australia

The All Blacks take their world record 18th straight win in what ended up a six tries to one drubbing, with the Wallabies just not good enough to break the ABs stranglehold on rugby union.

While the AB's won the score definitely didn't reflect the game and/or the statistic's. Wallabies desperately unlucky to have a legitimate try ruled out by the TMO (who just about awarded a try to the AB's from an obvious forward pass and fortunately Nigel Owens had the courage to overrule him). Pleasing to see that the Aussies came to play and fronted up for the majority of the game. They still need impact players off the bench.

Still a bit scary for the other tier 1 rugby nations when the AB's win ugly and from a below par performance.

The Wallabies will give a good account of themselves during their Northern tour.

The ABs were certainly made to work for their record victory in this Bledisloe Cup encounter and it was a gutsy performance from the Wallabies who came to play but were often sloppy and obviously the Australlians were fuming after the try was reversed in the 45 minute, it was after that incident that IMHO New Zealand took charge with a ruthless 15-minute burst of rugby that overpowered the visitors who by the end looked completely knackered out. I don't think it was all doom and gloom for the Australians and they should look forward to the Northern hemisphere tour which sees some promising matches for a team that has now got something to prove to disparagers of the Australians game.

The Wallabies can hold their heads up, gutsy performance from both sides. I think both sides will be seeing the doctors after this game, it was not for the faint hearted, congratulations to the Kiwis. Better luck to the Wallabies next time these two great sides meet.

Ireland 40-29 New Zealand

Ireland produced a stunning display to record a first ever win over New Zealand at the 29th attempt and end the All Blacks' run of 18 straight wins.

This was Ireland's first success over the Kiwis in 111 years and it came about in sensational fashion as Joe Schmidt's men repelled a stirring second-half comeback by Steve Hansen's side.

TJ Perenara, Ben Smith and Scott Barrett added to George Mola's first-half try for the New Zealanders but despite some sustained late pressure, they fell short for the first time in their past 19 encounters with top-tier nations.

Wales 8-32 Australia

Wales were utterly outplayed and lucky, in the end, to lose by only 24. The game was pretty much up at half-time. At that point Australia were leading by 17 and could have been many more ahead if they had only been a little more clinical with their finishing.

In other results...

Barbarians 31 - 31 South Africa Wembley Stadium,London
Japan 20 - 54 Argentina Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium

Massive congratulations to the Irish. You have been threatening for a couple of years. Sets up a tasty encounter in Dublin (I predict the Irish will sneak it!). Breathes some fresh air into world rugby.

Wales look to be going backwards even though they were missing some top players.

With the Irish strong and England on a par it is all set up for a scintillating Lions tour in 17

Wow, the Irish winning against the New Zealand juggernaut, well done Paddies. Well done Wallabies and Barbarians also, the Pumas are a bit like the All Blacks imo, big strong and hard to control them once they get going. I agree with tataw and Kul, its going to be an entertaining and hard battle for all teams this season, great for the game.
