Post by trubrit » March 25, 2011, 7:37 am

The annual boat race between Oxford and Cambridge takes place on the river Thames in London this Saturday 26th March. It is being shown live on BBC TV at 17.00 GMT, which is midnight here in Thailand .It looks like a close contest this year, but naturally I will be supporting the dark blues . \:D/

Well a comparatively easy win by 4 lengths for my crew ,Oxford. Watched by thousands lining the course as well as an estimated million on world wide TV. Not bad for a non event, aye adhoc? To add to a glorious day the Oxford Vets won their race as did the Isis crew over Goldie .
For anyone not familiar with this popular and traditional event it has been going since the first race between the two universities since 1829. I attach a brief history.http://www.theboatrace.org/article/introduction/history

Thank you Mr H. Gracious in defeat like a true Englishman, even if you are Dutch . \:D/
For those that enjoy the ladies . The Oxford and Cambridge ladies race takes place today at Henley with Natalie Redgrave, daughter of Sir Steve ,the five times Olympic champion, in the Oxford crew .

Congratulation TB!Although some might pooh pooh your pride and loyalty.I understand the passion involved! Also,in this case, very long traditions are involved, which IMO,makes it feel extremely exciting and the win, very rewarding! =D>

Just to complete a very good week. Oxford ladies beat Cambridge by half a length yesterday. For the non rowers amongst us a length is designated by the overall length of the boat. so in this case. Oxford crossed the finishing line half a boat length up. \:D/

University boat race 2014

Post by trubrit » April 5, 2014, 8:49 am

It's that time again . Tomorrow 6th April at 14.30, live on BBC 1.The varsities, Oxford and Cambridge meet on the river Thames in London for the 160th clash between them. Both teams this year feature members from, not only the UK but US, New Zealand and Australia. The Cambridge team have the heaviest team being 2.6 kilos average per man heavier. However Oxford has won the event 9 times since the turn of the century. Lets hope this year we can keep the crackpots out of the water and may the best team win, Oxford , naturally. :-"

What's happened to the crackpot? I don't think he'll be David Cameron's or Rupert Murdoch's butler.

Ooh no, he was told he could stay!

Sauce: BBC

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-25504051
A judge has criticised the government for trying to deport an Australian who disrupted last year's University Boat Race by swimming in front of the crews.

Following a six-month jail term for causing a public nuisance, the Home Office told Trenton Oldfield, 37, his presence was "undesirable".

Judge Kevin Moore said the deportation decision appeared to be exclusively due to one incident and granted his appeal.

The Home Office said it was disappointed by the ruling.
