Thanks Lee it's looking good.
In front of the walking track, there are lots of open air restaurants on the "Beach".
We always stay in Lang Xang on the river front.

The Australian Embassy Recreation Club is on the right about 10km out of town on the way back to the Friendship Bridge. A great pool and lounge on the banks of the Mekong. Two years ago it was approx 10k kip for a days membership

Not sure about that PP.
When I did a visa run I stayed at a small but well known hotel and the TW and I had a meal then decided to go up for a drink in the karaoke bar.
Let me tell you that it was no karaoke bar
Stayed for a few beer Laos' though and every time I went to the tiolet I was followed by a gentleman who insisted I come back when the wife was asleep!
She woke just as I was sneeking out the door

The Aussie club is now 40000Kip [$4] the last I went there, but be aware,it closes reasonably early, about 7 pm if my memory serves me right. At the moment, it is undergoing improvements.

When expats say they are renewing their Thai visa at the Thai embassy in Vientiane, they really mean the Thai Consulate. I notice on the map its designated as a consulate. Is that correct ??

Confusing, because the building was once the Thai Embassy.

Bubbles, it is on the right on Thadeua Rd heading back towards Thailand. If the map went that far I suppose it would be C 10 or D 10. The taxis know where it is no ploblems.

You could be right Tom, on some local maps it's listed as a consulate and others Embassy. I think it would be correct to call it Embassy.

Thanks for pointing it out.

Given that the US does have an Ambassador to Laos there, I would presume that Embassy would be the correct term as opposed to consulate.

I guess it doesn't matter what its called. That's the place where I will be going to renew my visa.

I know the location well. My house was immediately behind the Thai embassy. (the house was demolished and a new house built)

One time when giving directions to my house I said, "The Thai embassy is right in back of my house". A Thai spoke up and said you are in back of the Thai Embassy - it is not in back of you". Got to be careful what I say and how I say it.

Thai Embassy in Vientiane

It's listed as "Consulate" when it should be "Consular Office".. the actual embassy is in a slightly different location from the Consular office.
