Re: Myanmar coup

After the previous post, I googled 'which countries are democratic' and found this site.

https://worldpopulationreview.com/count ... -countries

One part of the report stood out.
The 10 most democratic nations in the world (2020):
Norway (9.87)
Iceland (9.58)
Sweden (9.39)
New Zealand (9.26)
Finland (9.25)
Ireland (9.24)
Canada (9.22)
Denmark (9.22)
Australia (9.09)
Switzerland (9.03)

The United States scored 7.92 in 2020 and again landed in the "flawed democracy" category, where it has resided since falling from "full democracy" in 2016. Intolerance of COVID-19 restrictions, distrust in the government, bipartisan gridlock, and especially the increasing ideological polarization between democrats and republicans are all cited as contributors to the lower score. For the full list of all 167 countries and their 2020 scores, see the table further down this page.

Have you tried searching 'which countries are democratic' on Yandex?

I had a look at a few of them, pretty much in line with the one I identified. Scandanian one topped, Malaysia was only SEAsian country with reasonable score. Singapore missed out being a single party nation.

USA ranking dropped like a stone after 2016.

OK. I was wondering if Yandex differs since it's a Russian search engine. Google.ru played second fiddle to them for a chunk of last year.

The list shown is eerily similar to the Numbeo report. Numbeo attempts to rank based on quality of life.

Interesting that while ranking is different, largely same list as liberal democratic list, Oman being a standout. The potential link between quality of life and political democracy is interesting.

I have read many, many reports that a handful of megarich actors in the USA have a huge sway over the GOP. The conservative/libertarian anti big government influence in the USA is enormous, just as the HiSo influence in Thailand is a major factor here.

Hi-so. Same same megarich actors.

So do they lump any more SE Asian kleptocracies or Chinese vassal states in with Myanmar?

I think it inappropriate to comment further on this forum.

Not unexpectedly, the Myanmar junta have taken the second anniversary of their coup as an opportunity to rewrite their own laws and permit a six month extension of the state of emergency.

Not unexpectedly, by cosying up to the despots, Thailand leads the ASEAN split on how to best resolve this sad state of affairs.
