there was never going to be democrocy in China or hong Kong . 90% of Chinese support the Chinese government so talking about democracy was just pie in the sky.thing is the few freedoms they had has been wasted by a tiny minority. I guess they just have to accept that they're chinese living in China. The good news is if they want democracy they can always move to the UK , they can give up their family , culture and blend into the melting pot . it is what it is.
I really would question your 90% of the people support the Government Dean. Mainland China is very much like most of Russia and quite a few SEA Countries where very few are very wealthy, a few more are in the doing well bracket but most are still working for day to day survival wages or not much more. China has a huge internal security system that prevents any kind of dissent against the Party leaders. Support is hardly the word for scared to object. Look what has happened in HK when they started to complain and demonstrate.
Chinese have about as much interest in democracy as we have in Communism. Very few are weathly ( you state more Billionaires than the USA),a "few" more doing well and the rest just surviving. Sounds like america to me, in fact it sounds like every country in the world. only 40 years ago 1.2 billion of them lived in extreme poverty mainly due to westerners trying to rip China apart seems to escape people. I was wrong about the 90% ,it is in fact 95.5% according to Harvard university
That will be one of the free and democratic votes/surveys held under the supervision of the Chinese state police Come on Dean even on a good day you aint gonna believe that. 40 years ago or so there was very little to no access to China so how were us evil westerners ripping China apart.

Historically we've always been trying to divide China up , plenty of reading about that subject. As for the survey you need to read about the findings. Although the Chinese numbers show 95.5% support for the communist party ,the survey also shows Chinese are not satisfied with local government ,I think as low as 11% due to corruption . point simply being the Chinese like their government. Local officials not so much. One thing they compared it too was america where the results are opposite , Americans don't trust the federal government ,but trust state government much more.

^ Good points well made.

Corruption in socialist regimes isn't news. Vietnam has seen some very high flying party members fall in very public arrests and trials. These include the boss of their state oil enterprise and more recently, the Hanoi People's Committee Chairman that hoped to bring F1 racing to Hanoi. The latter saw the inaugural event, already rescheduled due to Covid-19 last year, being canceled late last year despite the track already being built, certified by FIA, the date set and tickets and tour packages being sold. No worries about loss of face there.

For a while, under Xi's dictatorship in China, the frequent purging, punishment and executions of corrupt, provincial or city level flunkies had either eased, was being ignored or was being under-reported. Then high flyers and global success stories like Jack Ma suddenly get their wings clipped.

Dean.
Not allowed to dislike their Dictatorship. Same as a few times working in Hanoi quite a few comments that. 'Wish that the Americans had won.'

I just pointed out that in the Harvard study that 89% of Chinese complained/disliked/unsatisfied with regional communist party officials. If it was true you cannot condem party/members then how come 89% of Chinese are not in re education camps ?.As for Vietnam ,its a different form of communism more evolved from the old Soviet style . best way of looking at it is in China if the government wants your land you get compensated generously for it and helped to relocate, that's why so many Chinese ended up moving to cities ,in Vietnam all land belongs to the state and if your land is wanted by the state then your just left by the roadside with your suitcases. The failure of the Viet communist party is no comparison to the success of the ccp.

The good news for hong kongers is the UK government has just announced that if they come to the UK they can stay for at least 5 years, they have instructed local councils to provide housing and also social benefits. So not so bad .

In an article about Taiwan's response to mainland Chinese drone incursions over Taiwan's westernmost small islands, I picked up the following comment,

"Taiwan has intercepted at least one boat close to the Pratas carrying people fleeing from Hong Kong trying to make their way to Taiwan."

We can assume that these are not the rich who can easily fly away or those too impatient to wait for the approvals needed to relocate to (say) the U.K.

Is there going to be an exodus of Hong Kong ' boat people' as the CCP moves forward with accelerating the terms of their agreement with the U.K. on Hong Kong's autonomy?

Will the odious and repressive governments of China and their Hong Kong stooges permit Hong Kongers to move/travel to Canada, the U.K. and other destinations without imposing any repressive measures against them or their families?

Actually quite possible , but more than likely just never be able to return to any Chinese territory. I tell you why I don't buy into this odious and repressive bs. 2019 134,000,000 Chinese travelled worldwide ,nearly all returned. Seems reality doesn't quite match western propaganda , but that's not a shock.

Considering that Chinese tourists taking international vacations is still a relatively new endeavor with a comparatively inexperienced, neophyte band of travelers, it's not too hard to see them flocking home. Maybe they are compelled to purchase non-extendable r/t tickets?

I recall the first wave of Chinese in Pattaya on the "zero baht" packages with hordes of them being bussed about on totally prepaid agendas. An ugly, noisy rabble to put it politely. Move forward less than five years and the individual Chinese traveler, small family or couple backpacking has grown considerably. I've seen obviously western fast food savvy Chinese loading up at BK without tying up the order line like the cheap Indians. Hostels popping up left right and center as well as these better mannered tourist making Airbnb clients very happy.

Plenty of the richer Chinese have followed where the richer Russians led and acquired condos and houses in Thailand. Maybe there's a few Chinese that don't feel comfortable with their autocratic, socialist government by decree and keeping a foot in a foreign bolt-hole gives them a degree of security? Maybe a wonderful Plan-B retirement like every other old farang squatter has?

Found a new word for you to understand since you have a great understanding of the English language
Garrulous comes from the Latin word garrire for "chattering or prattling." If someone is garrulous, he doesn't just like to talk; he indulges in talking for talking’s sake — With 13 postings today you lead the pack, Congrats

When discussing the popularity of the Chinese government, one must not forget the Tiananmen Square Massacre from 15 April-4 June 1989. What lesson did the people of China learn from their government?

There is a difference between students taking the western road to study, Chinese tourists, and Hong Kongers moving elsewhere without expressing eternal gratitude and loyalty to their Communist rulers.
