Stonehaven train crash: three dead after derailment in Aberdeenshire

Three people have died after a passenger train derailed near Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire following a night of thunderstorms and torrential rainfall.

The three dead were the driver, conductor and a passenger. Six other people were taken to hospital for treatment. Their injuries are not believed to be serious.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 9.43am after four passenger carriages came off the track at Carmont, just west of Stonehaven. About 30 emergency vehicles including an air ambulance were reported to have attended the scene.

The earliest analysis suggests that shortly after passing through Stonehaven, the train encountered track flooding and land slip as it headed south and stopped. Being double-engined, the driver made a decision to return back up the same tracks to Aberdeen. At some point during this 'backing' operation, the train encountered more land slippage that had occurred after the train has passed over that area a few minutes earlier and derailed. The tracks pass through deep cuttings and over steep embankments near the River Caron in that area.

It appears the limited stop express train left Aberdeen on time at 06:38, passed through Stonehaven on schedule around 06:55 then fell of the tracks a short time afterwards. However, the alarm wasn't raised until 09:43 which is about half an hour after it's scheduled arrival time 0f 09:11 at Glasgow Queen Street. It makes four scheduled stops after leaving Aberdeen and before it arrives in Glasgow. Does nobody watch the automated tracking systems? Didn't some ScotRail supervisor in Montrose, Arbroath, Perth or Stirling not think to check why the Aberdeen express train was missing?
