Re: US Presidential election odds
I think that I know something about old age. At 75 years old I know that when I get up in the morning, its not so easy to get everything working again. I stumble around, bump into things, stub my toes and make my way to the bathroom to dribble a bit. Ten minutes later, I go dribble some again. I then feed my dogs. My creaky old back protests when I pick up their food pans. Then it's time to make my coffee. I make it myself because my wife makes such bad coffee that I can't drink it. Once again she has tricked me into making my own. On to my computer room. I look over the latest online news and soon want something from the kitchen. Once I get to the kitchen, I don't remember what I wanted.
I can sympathize with old politicians and judges, I know what ails Uncle Joe. He is getting senile and is no way fit to be president of the US, nor is the doddering Supreme Court lady justice fit to stay in office. You have to know when to hang it up and take it easy. I am thankful that I have had a healthy life and outlived many of my friends. I am also thankful that once everything gets working again in the morning, I feel pretty good.

Watching Ginsberg's last couple of interviews, the senility gene is recessive. Her body is a wreck but the brain synapses are still making all the right connections.
On the other hand, Sleepy Joe's toes are already a bloody mess and he can't remember why.
What's Donny John's mental faculties looking like these days? His legendary Alzheimer's when it comes to either not knowing or never having met people he's fired is still going great guns.

Re: US Presidential election odds
Although fundamentally a sound premise, isn't that just being ageist? You're too old at say 70? It applies in the work place for the average worker but politicians chose that career path because they think they're above average.
It gets a bit complicated when it comes to selecting the criteria to benchmark any polly's effectiveness or define if they've passed their use-by date. Attendance record? Voting history?
Term limits would be the obvious choice to get rid of the old, dead wood but I doubt there are many governments, democratic or socialist or fascist, that think it's a good idea. The UK's House of Lords is pretty useless already and talk of their abolition is more notable for it's frequency than any real substance or intent.
Re: US Presidential election odds
Ageist, Man oh Man my vocabulary just grows and grows everyday
As for my age unless some is after a date forget it
As for OLD running a country
If Donnie gets another term he will be 79 when done.He will be doing round 2 on his Bull S......T as he will have forgotten what he said he first time.
It will be a conversation somewhat like this "Heah Ivana, I mean Marla or is it Melania, well one of ya get over here and push the chair"
If Uncle Joe slips in man oh man he would be 86 after 2 terms (Do you want his finger on the button? shaking as it would be)

Re: US Presidential election odds
There is no maximum age limit for politicians in the national parliament of Australia. I would be happy to see that change.
On the other hand, judges of the High Court must retire when they hit 70 - which I reckon is a sound policy.
Comparing and contrasting with their brothers and sisters in the US Supreme Court - appointments are generally made (there have been exceptions, Lionel Murphy) on merit, rather than perceived/demonstrated political stance.

Re: US Presidential election odds
An alternative view.
Current Western politics has shifted to 'Presidential Style', semi autocratic leaders. Even the US that has long had a powerful executive branch, has shifted away from a balanced legislature to concentrate more power to the President. Courts and senior positions are stacked, party power figures pull strings, too much power in too few hands. It has been like this for a long time, but has become worse since the 1970's.
Now concentrating that power in an individual his/her capacity takes on an elevated responsibility.
Reagan had lost it while in office, but the bumbler was a nice guy, had afternoon naps, dribbled and stubbed his toes, however he delegated and divested power. On balance while he was heading down the unhappy path of dementia, the government was quite effective in many areas. A glaring exception was the deregulation of the financial sector driven by the ridiculous false hope of trickle-down economics. A more independent public service could have blunted that stupid policy.
We don't need old or young, we need reduced executive powers with capable cabinets back by a semi-autonomous professional public service that can provide stable advice as elected official come and go.

Re: US Presidential election odds
As long as it is up to congress to establish term limits, we will NEVER see it happen. No way will they ever vote themselves out of their lucrative positions. Their main efforts are to get reelected. To hell with the citizens and doing the job they were elected to do. They limit a president to two terms so why not limit useless congressmen to two terms. Somewhat of a double standard there, is it not?

A scathing, and sad, assessment of Trump's response to the CV-19 crisis.
For those who already understand that he is a "a sociopath and a malignant narcissist", it will come as no surprise.
For those who still believe this man has something to offer, you really should read it.

And you think the FT has some sort of credibility? Maybe 20 years ago.
The forest was shrinking daily but the trees kept voting for the axe as its handle was made of wood and they thought it was one of them.

Excellent article but I don't suppose that many Trump supporters will bother to read it.jackspratt wrote: ↑May 18, 2020, 8:10 pmA scathing, and sad, assessment of Trump's response to the CV-19 crisis.

Particularly agree with this:
“Trump is caught in a box which keeps getting smaller,” says George Conway, a Republican lawyer who is married to Kellyanne Conway, Trump’s senior counsellor. “In my view he is a sociopath and a malignant narcissist. When a person suffering from these disorders feels the world closing in on them, their tendencies get worse. They lash out and fantasise and lose any ability to think rationally.”
"America, in other words, should brace itself for a turbulent six months ahead – with no assurance of a safe landing."

Re: US Presidential election odds
I am not sure whether you have stated for effect that Conway is a republican lawyer, however Conway declared himself an independent in 2018 not long after being overlooked by President Trump for the post of Solicitor General. Since that rejection, Conway has spewed and written personal attacks to anybody who will listen regarding the president.
