Apparently not. :(
Thailand's military has deployed warships and helicopters to search for 33 marines missing after a naval vessel sank overnight in choppy waters in the Gulf of Thailand.

Poor seamnaship and I forsee a Court martial ahead, alwaus one when a naval ship sinks , no matter what reason. Explanations never a Thai strong pointbut questions there will certainly be, the answers will probably not be forthcoming hough. Yet they still seek submarines, gawd help the Naval Ratings all I can say

What are you talking about - I looked at it immediately before I posted.

And I just looked again, and the story is still there.

She may have got caught in a side-sea. Usually a ship under power maintains a heading into the wind and waves and doesn't try to turn. When a ship loses propulsion, then the ability to prevent being turned by wind and wave action is badly impaired or lost. The reports suggest she was hit by flooding wave action before losing propulsion which suggests she was trying to maneuver or even turn which is risky even under power. Also suggests that sea doors and hatches hadn't been secured ahead of inclement weather either?

Being shallow, the seas in the Gulf of Thailand pick up rapidly in a storm and 3 m seas with a short fetch makes for extreme vessel dynamics. By the same token, seas flatten quickly on the storm's passing. Sukhothai was only about 76 meters long so she would be being tossed around a fair bit. The photos suggest she has quite a high windage aft of a low bow so more easily turned by the wind after losing propulsion.

Tragic loss of life.

I'm a bit surprised there is not more and constant coverage in the English media.

I think it's a matter of access to information/making information available for public consumption. There's actually more information available on the status of #2 on the Post's most viewed list than on #1, thanks to a reporter who has historically had some insider information. Unfortunately for Thailand, that info is available to the general public........without a vpn
