Tory MP Steve Baker saying Cummings "must go" after alleged lockdown breach

When the Prime Minister announced Britain was going into lockdown two months ago he gave the apparently unequivocal instruction that we must all “stay at home”.

Within 24 hours, Dr Jenny Harries, the deputy chief medical officer for England, outlined possible exceptions to that rule, including how ill parents with a small child created “exceptional circumstances”.

Now, after it has emerged Dominic Cummings and his wife travelled 260 miles with their son to stay at a home near his extended family in Durham despite having coronavirus symptoms, allies of Boris Johnson’s special advisor are highlighting that advice to justify his trip.

At the Downing Street press conference on March 24 Dr Harries said parents who are ill and may not be able to look after a child created “exceptional circumstances” where family members could be called upon to help....

What Cummings did is what most people are doing. He used his brain.

Politics of envy. Because he is in the fortunate position to have parents with 2 homes and a successful support system, he is being pilloried.

Millions of people have complied with this guidance at huge personal cost. A boy died without his mother by his side; people have been unable to spend time with relatives who have terminal illnesses. There have been missed funerals; babies born who are yet to meet their grandparents; single parents with Covid-19 who have struggled to care for their children while sick ...

Of course this lockdown has involved unbearably difficult decisions; of course parents have fretted what will happen to their children were they to become seriously ill. But many will have decided that they must comply with the government guidelines.

In shielding Cummings, ministers are revealing an ugly truth: they are willing to undermine the government’s public health messaging and its entire pandemic strategy – to risk people’s lives – in order to save their colleague’s job. It is a disgrace.

His wife had the virus FFS and he still broke quarantine regulations

Its a pretty abysmal state of affairs if you cant find someone in London (where he has family) to deliver food to him during lockdown

Dominic obviously benefited from being a two home, possibly two car family. Lots of them about these days.

Meanwhile, residents of Hackney, the London borough with the highest density of tower block dwellers (ie. no garden or balcony) were being harassed by a very reluctant police for going to the park on a Sunday after they had self-isolated for probably more than seven weeks and were still healthy with no recognized symptoms.

So as far as Dominic is concerned, it's sometimes good to not be a pleb.
