If you want to check DC amperage, a clamp type is far easier to use. You don't have to cut any wires. If you mainly want to check voltage AC and DC this would be OK.

The first one I bought is a UNI-T brand. I had thought it would do the job. It measures AC, DC voltage and AC amperage as well as continuity. It cannot measure DC amperage.
Have a couple of different Uni_T meters just for use at home on the bench.
Not many have the necessary CAT rating for out on the job.
Unusual for a multimeter to not have a DC amp range and have an AC amp range.
Many different models are available from them ...what was the model..?

Both multi meters are clamp type;

UNI-T model UT202A
Fluke model 362

Both are good for what they do but I much prefer my Fluke meter.
