International flight through ticket DMK -> KKC

Post by sometimewoodworker » May 8, 2017, 6:14 pm

I'd like information from anyone who's had an International flight through ticket on AirAsia transiting DMK terminating KKC.

As far as I know the baggage is checked through to KKC, it really a question as to where we clear immigration, I assume it will be in Khon Kaen, and that we would be transferred airside.

I'm asking as it would be very convenient for us if we can meet someone in Don Muang, but I'm guessing that we can't.

I've done it from Udon to Penang - via DM.

I cleared customs & Immigration in Udon.
We did not exit at DM but were escorted through the back ways of the airport through to a airline ticket check (for the DM to Penang flight) & told what gate we were flying from.
Then another security scan...
We were then escorted past an Immigration Officer (who checked that the number of passengers matched what the airline expected) & were let through a side door directly into the International departure lounge.

It would not have been possible for us to have met anyone at DM who were not on an International flight themselves..

EDIT
Sorry STW that was out..
On the way back from Penang to Udon we had to do customs & Immigration at DM as normal - then DM to Udon was just a normal domestic flight.
We could have done what we pleased at DM on the return, including meeting anyone..
My exact memory is poor as to if our baggage was sent through to Udon from Penang as we had issues with Air Asia in Penang - it was pure chaos attempting to check in...but I believe the label said Udon rather than Bangkok..

Thanks Bob.

So it seems like a definitive maybe  depending on AirAsia ticketing and ground staff.

FWIW Udon is not a fly through destination now, I'm not sure it has an internal area even. Khon Kaen is and has an international area even though I've never seen anyone using it.

More input will be good

An update, on a fly through ticket from Japan to Khon Kaen the bags were checked through to Khon Kaen we cleared immigration in DMK with cabin bags only

A caveat, in KK all international bags from all fly through pasangers were put through the x-ray machine no exceptions.

Depends on exactly how one defines fly-through. Scoot has a single fare between SIN-UTH. Connect to Nok at DMK, where you do customs and immigration. Interestingly and bafflingly, buying the same tickets separately from Nok and Scoot costs a tiny bit less than the Scoot through fare between SIN and UTH.

Well, Udon Thani airport now has dedicated International arrivals and departure areas, just locked up and not currently in use. I did hear that one or 2 international flights will start around the end of the year - but probably charter flights.

A fly through ticket (not defined by me but by AirAsia) is one where your baggage, and I believe you in the way back, is checked through to your final destination, AFIK you clear immigration at KK on the way out. I will update this after my return flight.

Udon Thani does not have an international section in operation at the moment so can not be a destination, Khon Kaen does and so international flights/passengers can start (or end) there
AirAsia wrote:Baggage is checked through to the final destination – guests do not need to collect baggage at transit hub and check-in again.
Upon arrival from first flight sector, guests will go through the transfer hall
For international to international connecting flights, guests do not need to clear immigration, thus will not be subjected to fulfill visa requirements in Kuala Lumpur or Don Mueang transit hubs (except during extended delays)
Guests will be provided with the second boarding pass at the transfer hall, if it wasn't given at the point of origin
Guests can then go directly into departure hall.

Update:
Flight time 7:30, security check opens at 6:30 Boarding time at Khon Kaen 6:50, immigration officer arrived at 7:00 (he usually arrives at 7:30) just for us.
Bags ticketed to Japan, Cleared Immigration in KK, AA staff waiting at DMK to escort the two of us to the CIQ desk (no idea what that stands for, usually called a transfer desk)

Now waiting for our onward flight.

Update on update. Back in Japan no hiccups, landed (wheels down) 19:26, cleared customs and immigration by 19:55, got the 20:15 skyliner.

Customs, Immigration & Quarantine. It was originally designed as a one-stop service to deal with these issues for people with tight connections.
