Mekong River near to flooding

Post by arjay » August 11, 2008, 9:25 pm

Last night I looked at the Mekong river in Nong Khai, and it was at the highest level I have ever seen, (though I have only been familiar with the area within the last couple of years).

The water level was within about 4" of the lower level of the promenade area, near where the ferries depart from. Lunchtime today it looked to have risen by about 2' foot, and the lower level was under water.

I am currently staying just across the road from the river and the water there is about 1m below the road surface level, (just checked 1.4m to be exact) and it has been raining for most of today. So I am concerned what tomorrow morning will bring! :?

Don't worry RJ. If the levels get too high, just grab hold of your avatar, and I guarantee you will be able to float for hours.

What a magnificent set of waterwings :D

The river was full of big trees today! So there must have been flooding upstream, but the water is still about 1.8 meters from flooding in NK!

Hey I have an idea....(now the world is coming to an end and hell is freezing over) we can have a wading boots race!!!!! When Udon Thani has a flood, get the waders out and have a race. Knee waders, hip waders and full waders races, if ever the Olympics comes to Thailand, we can enter the Waders race in the games.

Well it has risen by a further 1 foot (.30m) overnight, and is now only 1.10m below the road surface where I live - i.e. flooding the town.

I was talking to another farang who has lived here many years and he says it is the highest he has seen it, and he has heard that there's more water on the way down and it's likely to flood by tomorrow!!

I will at least try and keep this one on topic, despite some attempts to hijack it.

Just checked at lunch time. Near the pier it's half a metre below road level = less than 2 feet.. Opposite where I live it's 1m below the road, but 30m down the road it's only half a metre below. It's getting close!

I think there's another foot or two height gain from the road to our door threshold though.

I note many street corners in the town are already flooded, presumably because the drains have got nowhere to go.

It will need less than a metre. I took these around lunch time. Where there were 8 steps showing, there are now only 7, a bit further along there's even less height - about 0.5m.

It's interesting to see all the wildlife hiding on the other side of the wall. I've seen snakes and jinglen, the slightly larger lizard.

The road is at the base of the wall and the wall is open at intervals, so is for safety not to hold back the river.

I too have heard there's 1m or 2m more on the way.

Sorry, it took me a while uploading them, and I've also been quite busy, - made two runs moving some of my stuff to another place on higher ground and moving what's left higher up off the floor.
