wazza is Locked Out

Post by jackspratt » July 15, 2014, 10:32 am

I have received the following email from member "wazza".

Can you please help.

Thanks
tried to reply to a couple of topics ( nothing out of the normal ) and now seems that im blocked by possible SPAM

" Your IP 190.208.xx.x has been blocked because it is blacklisted. For details please see http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=190.208.xx.x.

I didn't open the link, as it suggests some sinister issues ...

But cant reply at all for now

A while back the site began to be hit with a huge number of spam posts - hundreds a day.
Individually blocking the IP addresses seemed to have zero effect.
I believe that the technical wizards then came up with a system that automatically blocked IP addresses that the organisation Spamhaus had identified as being used by spammers.
Wazza is trying to post from one of these IP addresses.
It could be that it is a public IP address that someone has used for malicious purposes in the past, it could also be an innocent address that just happens to be within a 'group' of dodgy IP addresses. It could be that it has actually been used by spammers in the past - an infected machine for example..

I think the technical guys need the EXACT IP address in order to resolve the issue from the UM end.
I think that the link to Spamhaus that wazza received allows him to go to their site & explain that he is not a spammer & to 'free up' his IP address.

Sorry I have no idea how long either route takes to free up the IP he wants to use... :(

Internet Router Reboot:

I suggest Wazza should shut off his internet router, and reboot it a few minutes later.

This usually gives it a new IP address.

To check the IP before and after, visit: http://www.whatsmyip.org/

The IP should be different. If not reboot the router again, waiting even longer.

[technical mumbo jumbo--->Depending how remote you are and the DHCP setup your ISP has set on it's DSLAMMs (or similar devices) a new WAN IP will be available in due course.

Why'd it ban the IP?

IP's banned are banned for good reason. An inordinate amount of Spam was detected from that IP thus the ban. Therefore the PC or other devices sharing that IP have been compromised by Spam bots or other malicious software.

Which in turn intend to down or ()wn our board or server. So simply "allowing a banned IP back in" is no go. Doing so risks all other PC's connected to the forum. Quote of the day: We shall not be the vector of all your PC's doom. [-(

If the machine continues to be infected after rebooting the internet router and getting a new IP, find it no surprise that our defenses will ban it yet again.

The warning link from Spamhaus is not dangerous to click, -it is in fact informative and describes what is amiss.

Anti-Virus:

Disinfect the PC, remove all viruses and backdoors. One of the many Advice Computing (the 7-11 of computer stores around here) can do the anti-virus clean-up. As can several other shops. You can also do it yourself. CNET's http://download.com website has quite a few excellent "recommended anti-virus apps" if you search in the "Free" section. It's been the go-to option for just about any reliable free software since 1998.

I thought I had gotten blocked a few times, really nothing I said so I was a bit curious about it.

If he can read his post, click on his name for items posted and he can back door his way in. The times it happened to me didn't last long

I'm still looking for tat on/off thingy

If he really thinks he has been blocked intentionally, did happen to me once. A misunderstanding in terms. Made a call asked why we resolved it and I was back on in 15 mis. Remember can mean different things to different people depending on where you come form. I still don't know what bloody hell really means. But it doesn't sound like something good to the American Ear.

I think it's the internet gods blocking wazza because he posted some negative remarks on the greatest living Australian who really needs no introducing and shouldn't be sledged - a Victorian, not knighted, likes sleeping with actresses and looks younger as the years pass ...

True indeed Bob, the IP in question appears to have bee used in the past for malicious purposes. As Wazza is back on, likely via a new IP, I have submitted the one he *was* using to Spamhaus for reconsideration.

For info regarding their systems (it's not classified LOL) click here:

http://www.spamhaus.org/

Many organizations have adopted the use of XBL, PBL, RBL, SBL, and other technologies to stem the ever-rising tide of standard PCs being co-opted into use as military cyber-war drones or for-profit bot-nets (identity theft, etc).
