Report of an Independent Review of Global Response is In

Post by jackspratt » May 12, 2021, 8:18 pm

An independent panel set up to review the global response to the coronavirus pandemic has found a litany of failures led to the disaster and warned another catastrophic pandemic may happen unless "urgent and vital" steps are taken.

In damning findings released on Wednesday, the Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response said it found "weak links at every point in the chain" and global political leadership was "absent".

The panel, set up by the World Health Organization (WHO) to learn lessons from the pandemic and address future health threats, also found the WHO itself was "under-powered" and world inequalities had been exacerbated by the global response.....

...."The situation we find ourselves in today could have been prevented," she said.

"It is due to a myriad of failures, gaps and delays in preparedness and response....."

(Apologies in advance, Sport)

Seems to pull no punches, in criticising the WHO and its DG.

But equally critical of governments which ignored warnings from the WHO when the impending disaster was recognised, and promulgated.

Where was the global leadership from the country so many seem to think is the new Big Man on Campus, China?

They've done nothing but spread their nastiness across the globe and then try to sell face diapers to the world.

Is this the new definition of global leadership?

China and the WHO are largely to blame in the beginning by seemingly downplaying the seriousness of the situation. As far as governments are concerned, the Canadian government seemed to ignore the warnings once WHO indicated it was serious. Canada's Prime Minister said Trump's closure of flights from China was racist and refused to ban flights to and from Wuhan. When it was clear there was a problem in China, Iran and Italy, the Premier of Ontario advised students taking their March break to enjoy themselves in Florida, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. The federal government sent our supplies of masks to China and entered into an agreement with China to develop a vaccine. A few months later China ended the partnership, which the government hid from the populace for months. Unlike Britain, the federal government refused to build factories to produce a vaccine leaving Canada reliant on foreign governments for their vaccine supplies. In the event, our acquisition of vaccines from foreign governments proved not to be reliable and many people could not get their scheduled shots since there was little supply of vaccines. And, so on.

A review Of the WHO is easy . They are well past their sell by date , full of corruption , and need to be completely re organised .
As for the virus , its pretty simple . The officials in Wohan lied to central government for fear of losing their jobs , The Chinese government lied to the WHO about the seriousness of the situation , and tried to silence the medics in Wohan . The WHO sat on their hands untill it was too late , because they could not be bothered to put boots on the ground to establish for themselves the severity of this virus , and basically accepted the words of a Government that have no one elses interest , but themselves . A government i might add that has consistently lied to the world for years about pretty much everything from the the imprisonment of its own people , to forced labour camps , to importing endangered species .
If and it is a big if the WHO had reacted earlier , and not pandered to the Chinese , then maybe the rest of the world would of took it a little more seriously .

Collectively, the world's leadership were slow. There were no real leading lights anywhere and more than a few who hijacked it for personal or political gain. The closest any of them get to a positive action was the rapid lockdown called in Italy. With the Chinese obfuscating and the WHO hand-sitting, that signal from Rome was totally missed or misread by the government's of other nations. I recall Iran was the next big Covid hot spot but not unexpectedly, due to their (mostly) international pariah status, this was largely given the "Oh dear, what a pity, never mind" treatment.

Maybe if the euphoria of Brexit and the distractions of the immediate post-Brexit wrangling wasn't consuming the UK and EU, they could have raised a red flag because with the US getting into election year, nobody in Washington was being too serious about it.

But if I was to dig out my old HSE Incident Investigation cap and declare a root cause, it is the Chinese for trying to hide it all and the WHO themselves who still can't explain why, when the global rate of infection had already passed their own published criteria for declaring a pandemic, didn't do so for almost a month after the statistics told them to.

The darker side of me believes once China realised how devastating this virus was , the knowingly unleashed it onto the rest of the world to destabilize Governments and countries economies .
Why else try to hide it , lead the WHO up the garden path thats paved with money trees , and leave Wohan open to international flights , when they had closed it to domestic flights .
Then the little bastards try to claim they too are a victim of this cluster fck .

The sad thing that after the millions spent and the name calling and shaming has gone on, most of the public will not give a damn , as thankful that in the end vaccines were rolled out in a timely fashion and the forward thinking Government did at least do something right . Sort of like WW!!, eventually the good guys won , sort of reactions we all have to major international problems . Watch wait, plan attack and win.
Will make no difference ion the next 50 years, we all just have to learn to live with another ongoing problem .
As for the Chinese, which parent ever chastises publically their own for doing something wrong , privately they might ,but never in public the Chinese government is no different than a parent .

Yeah, I think the who what where when and why has become irrelevant due to the lapse in time. People, including myself, just want s*** to get back to normal, whatever normal may be.

This thing has caused me to delay my retirement by 7 months, and me getting out of here by at least 9 months.

Can you please explain what you are talking about. Is this a Guardian thing or just a HW trying to be recognised as a political expert.
