Youngest lads playmate (who doesn't go to school) was feverish so Mrs tam asked his mum if she had tested him but appears that his mum was unaware of RTK tests (or just didn't fancy paying for one). So Mrs tam administers a test from the half-a-dozen I bought on lazada... and it's positive.

Youngest lad now verbotten to go play with ANY of his mates after school. Mrs tam went ahead and tested ALL the squatters at our house... all negative and I reactivated the "Wear a mask and wash your hands or f*ck off!" regimen with a big sign at the front gate. The upside is 'Soi Dek' is now very quiet and bereft of noisy tykes running around raising hell so I guess they're all being kept indoors as well.

Now the moobahn is on watch and the orbortor is planning a mass testing at the village hall this Thursday.

PS: The big upside is the other bro-in-law is 'stranded' in Nong Khai after his wedding so we won't be heading to Ubon for his divorce any time soon.

Reviewing the daily covid totals reported on here, the number of cases in the last month reported in Udon has changed very little, maybe has gone up by about 30%. In the last 2 weeks of February, no reported deaths .... this coincided with a government push to increase tourism, and gave Thailand one of thehighest Covid survival rates in the world.
Now March, and the Ukraine war has killed off any hope of a rapid recovery in tourism. Deaths ready in double figures for this month.... such a change staristically unlikely. Either cases have risen dramatically, but were under reported, or more likely deaths in February were attributed to other causes to make Udon and Thailand look good. Thai statistics an example of "lies, damn lies and statistics" at its worst.

Here, in the UK, pretty much all restrictions have ended and we still have folk getting covid it’s just now that it’s generally extremely mild symptoms more akin to a heavy cold or mild flu.

Lots of vaccinated people, natural immunity etc all have helped

It’s still a concern, of course.

Other countries also seem to be following the same pattern of re-opening.

I wonder when Thailand will follow suit and what the barrier is to them not doing so

Yep, out of control around here in the rice paddies as well. Our adjoining village had a very large wedding on Friday, so far 15 guests +ve (and counting) of which 7 are locals. Most are triple vaxed and no worrying symptoms.

Mrs Dero's sister has come down with it, living in London, and although not required to wear a mask etc. is taking every precaution.

IMHO Covid will become nothing more than a common cold into the future! AND the number of reported cases is absolute BS within Udon and does not reflect the true situation, but then do we really care? Some of us may have had it already and don't know.

I think I read some Thai government wonk eyeballing June for a possible alignment with the real world after the WHO declare Covid as endemic.

I feel sorry for Hong Kong and China who are still chasing the impossible zero-covid dream.

It's extraordinary how they didn't vaccinate the old folks in Hong Kong. We did in New Zealand and it, of course, works.

What about old people in rural Thailand? My 95 year old mother-in-law has only had one vaccination and she now has Covid. It's about day 5 since she tested positive and she's not doing too badly so far.
