A Scathing Indictment of the UK Prime Minister
Re: A Scathing Indictment of the UK Prime Minister
The problem in the UK , USA and Europe is that most people hàve not experienced even a serious epidemic before Covid-19 and thought pandemics wouldn't effect them. History and biology are only understood at the most basic level..
Being pretty well educated in both i had already cancelled all travel plans for 2020 by the end of January and advised my UK relatives to put together emergency food supplies a few days later. What was coming was quite clear. Unfortunately governments prefer money to emergency planning - and still do.

Re: A Scathing Indictment of the UK Prime Minister
I just hope the Luftwaffe or their future equivalent are prepared to accept what is and what is not acceptable to the "pampered populations" of UK & US before they undertake WWIII.
If the politicians on both sides of the pond had been up front and honest with the population, (utopia or what) I'm quite sure that the vast majority would have seen that they were indeed "Staring down the barrel of a gun" and would have been prepared to do whatever was required ...... especially if those same politicians put into place the measures that would convince even the most serious doubter that breaking the rules would not be anywhere near worth it.

Re: A Scathing Indictment of the UK Prime Minister
Totally agree Rick.
The problem is Stats that people over here still dont get it no matter how firm the Government is or was. If they had painted a domesday scenario in, say, January and closed borders, they would have been ridiculed. Businesses would have demanded that they stay open and people would have been whining because they couldn't get their imported lager.

Re: A Scathing Indictment of the UK Prime Minister
To be honest, if that were the case, then any business demanding to stay open should have had the book and everything else thrown at them until they "changed their attitude". I'm sure most business "leaders" would have seen sense after a day or two behind bars without their "creature comforts". The UK needed a strong leader willing to make the unpopular decisions for the benefit of all, but all it got was a dithering after dinner speaker not able to decide if there was one or two "i"s at the end of his latest latin wordsearch

Not sure if it was ridicule was what they were afraid of. The more authoritarian governments of the world mandated border closures, shuttering of businesses and curfews that stifled people movement. For the most part, they have fared far better than the nations where populist leaders needed to pander to the sensitivities of the "pub and gym set", airlines and tour operators.samster wrote: ↑February 24, 2021, 6:38 pmTotally agree Rick.

Johnson's current tenure was boosted by a not insignificant shift by traditional Labour voters seeking whatever it took to break the Brexit logjam. He also faces a significant challenge to the Union. Granted that the population is smaller and the demographics less complex but Scotland's First Minister has arguably done a better job of handling the people with regard to their pandemic policies.
Maybe the PM has to keep pandering to his future voter base regardless of their unwillingness to accept the realities of the pandemic and being unable to accept the notion that there's a new and as yet undefined normal.

My post above was based on my opinion on the current state of society as a whole with regard to all social media ..FB Twitter Splatter etc as well as it seems forims like UM going the same woķey way as so many other areas of gemeral.life .. i fully unferstand the need to.police a forum with reference to the political.situation and the royal.family etc but its getting crazy às it seems cant call this that cos it MAY upset someone or deemed racist .. this starting with religion n skin colour but now has manifested into all walks of life .. so when it seems one cant use certain words or express an opinion frankly n call a spade a spade without being deleted ts time to not bother .. my little spat or disagreement with vlad and a recent udon based FB attack which was mostly lies but never the less left someone feeling uoset simply highlighted how i feel.about issues such as social media and more how things have changed since Alf Garnet was graced our TV screens and sadiq khan became moyir of London taking diwn statues ..
Also.fortunately our business appears to have survived covid and is now very busy again . mainly due to some importers closing down whilst we introduced new interim.products ..im.too busy to let petty stuff get in my head .... so combine all.this n its time to.say adios amigos ..
I shall.miss joining in your sattire Tam .. but not the long wirds you use cos dont know what they mean ... i wont miss listening to the all too.often Thai bashing from.the likes of vlad who only being a transient visitor seems to.know it all from somtam.to jetski scams ... and bar fines to running a business ..alas maybe ive been doing it wrong all thesecyears as our business involves slighty more than sat on a plastic chair watching my ex missu flip.burgers om a motorbike .
As bugs bunny used to ... fook.me hes got a gun !!!! ..oh no the other one THATS ALL FOLKS .

I agree wholeheartedly with the comments penned by DM, we are ALL decoming so afraid of upsdetting someone that in order to satisfy our in many cases personal viewpoint, many comments said by many as a jibe/joke or even truthfully are now being banned, deleted or the originator being subject to stringent moderation in assll cases by not only news Outlets but even by lowly forums.
people have become so THIN SKINNED that the first thing they do if upset is to complain, moan, threaten and even as a last resort threaten to SUE if their fragile ego is somehow threatened . There is a whole difference to calling someone an idiot to expressing racially charged comments, however these days some cannot or do not know the difference and worry that others will get upset.
HELLO, welcome to the real world, your mothers never said that everyone would be nice and loving and cozy all the time , in truth after you reach the age of maturity, apart from your parents the rest of the world does not give a damn whether you live or die in truth, if your upset, get over it and move on .
We now apparently call them snowflakes , so fragile that they have to be looked after just in case they get upset. I personally have never followed that path , called a spade a spade and a w****r a w****r, you do not like it tough. Over the years people have called me plenty. Accusing me of something I am not is however unacceptable .
Many have learnt to play the 'My feelings are HURT card ' to their advantage and that is sad. I am not leaving but will miss DM's down to earth comments, his leaving I feel is fuelled by more than he is saying but nevertheless he will be missed.

Tam, noted that you covered your ass by say "arguably" . As per one of your earlier posts also claiming that Wee Nippy had "managed" the Pandemic better than Johnson without one specific action mentioned. I now throw the floor open to you to just give even 2 examples where the Great Shepherdess has either managed the Pandemic or handling the people better instead of just watching what GovUK does and copying. She has been quite clever at making sure her own personal image is being rammed down everyone in Scotland's throats each day but thats not going to save her in the Fat Salmond affair.
As a closer, sorry to see you go DM. Leave's less of us non Guardian worshipers to keep up the work of presenting a balanced view of our World.

Re: A Scathing Indictment of the UK Prime Minister
Scotland's best efforts have been devalued by the lack of agreement with London, hence the ability of those fronting up at international airports in England to simply enter Scotland as a "domestic".
This is due to the wiff-waffing of the incumbent Prime Minister. He wants the accolades of high office but is incapable of doing what's needed to earn them. He is less of a Thatcher and more of a Chamberlain.
I am not saying Starmer is made of sterner stuff but I reckon Angela Rayner would drive a poker up his ass when it was needed. It's a pity that Pratel doesn't use her unique and significant position to tell Johnson to stop trying to be everyone's everyman instead ranting at her department colleagues and civil servants. I'd rather see that than the pathetic fawning acquiescence of Shapps, Hancock and Williamson. Meally-mouthed Gove just makes my skin crawl and as for Rees-Mogg, the thinking man's Ileum, well... let's not go there.

And get back on topic.

Simple fact is that throughout the previous year of pandemic management, the CCQ (Covid Confusion Quotient) south of the border has always been several degrees of magnitude higher than it's ever been in Scotland or the other two countries in the Union. No vague promises of relaxing rules because they happen to have a Tory council or ignoring the strong arguments of a failed candidate for Labour leadership. No stupid notions akin to postcode quarantines and trying to give cities, counties and boroughs some sort of Covid-19 autonomy while allowing people to lose sight of the basic rules. Little England is quite little after all but maybe it's just that the Scots have a better handle on common sense.
Re: A Scathing Indictment of the UK Prime Minister
Just asked for 2 examples and as usual received the usual wishy washy, use big words to show I read the Guardian nonsense without even one example to prove your claims. Agree with your observation about Scots and common sense, just hope upon hope that the Scots with common sense will realise that the Great Shepherdess is closer to Irish Republicanism than Scottish common sense.tamada wrote: ↑February 26, 2021, 8:42 amThere you go again Alex, trying to pigeonhole a non-Tory, non-nationalist, non-socialist.AlexO wrote: ↑February 26, 2021, 7:39 amJohnson's current tenure was boosted by a not insignificant shift by traditional Labour voters seeking whatever it took to break the Brexit logjam. Whats the score Alex with Salmon vs Sturgeon which 1 is lying?

There's been negligible hand-wringing and gurning about confusing and contradictory government advice in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland because they make decisions and stick by them
or,
The endless hand-wringing and gurning about being confused is solely in England because of their wishy washy, flippy floppy rules and revisions thereof.
OMG! Would you look at that. There's the TWO examples you've been badgering me for.
